Hms invincible

The naval version of the Europhoon has been mooted for years, and is not going to happen as the undercarriage is not designed for the huge loadings of carrier landings.

And who's fault is that exactly?

Here's what the French built after they walked out on the Eurofighter project over a carrier ops disagreement

Yup, killing tanks and shooting down nasties... whilst the much vaunted Typhoon is boring holes in the sky and hoping that the AVM was wrong about the Tornadoes having destroyed the Libyan Airforce..

I predict mucho improved sales for Rafale....

Ship Breaking

It was Cairn Ryan, near to Stranraer. I remember seeing the last bits of HMS Albion (circa 1976) being turned into razor blades...!

Actually there was a major ship-breaking enterprise at Craig Ryan, ( sp ?) near Stranraer, well along to the North East of the loch compared to where the ferries for Ireland come & go.

The old conventional fixed wing ( as opposed to VSTOL Harriers ) Ark Royal was scrapped there, the pub/ hotel near Sandhead nearby Luce Bay - still a target area - has the ship's 'flooding diagram' for engineers to follow as a guide if the **** hit the fan as a souvenir wall display.

Re. scrapping A, Harriers, B, Ark Royal & in effect Illustrious, please pass me a rifle if Cameron & co wander across my sights, and if anyone gives me that BS about 'necessary after the last lot' I'll ask why bankers are being rewarded; as I fire !

The Rafale is indeed a good example of getting one's arse in gear and doing the business, not sitting around talking about it !

I wouldn't fancy its' chances in a pure air -air fight with a Typhoon, but they are both 'advanced 4th generation' and already long in the tooth compared to the F-22 etc.

The Mirage ( delta wing versions, yes there were others like the F1 ) was never a brilliant fighter, but a very good multi-mission platform to operate relatively cheaply by 3rd world type outfits.

It is often said that modern systems like off-boresight missiles coupled with helmet-mounted cuing targetting ( the missile goes where you're looking, with a targetting display on the helmet visor ) that aircraft agility is becoming an obsolete issue; the Test Pilots I know disagree pretty strongly about this, whether it's a case of being really prepared for hard fighting, or just preserving their jobs, is your guess.

Meanwhile the Rafale is doing fine as a jack of all trades ( the F-18E is another similar example, the design was deliberately 'taken to the max, then back 20 % ' to give reliability and the fortitude for carrier work ) probably all one needs unless in a super-power conflict, ie World War 3 !!!

VSTOL flight has suffered a huge setback - the major development and financial problems encountered by the JSF / F-35 programme with exotic features like an afterburning engine meaning it can't land on normal ship decks or unprepared forward operating bases ( the major point fo the US marines and others ) radar in the wing leading edges, stealth etc- while what the world really wanted was a relatively simple update of the Harrier 2+ !

Have a look at www.pprune.org/military aircrew and search 'F-35 cancelled, then what ? '

The naval Rafale was not quite as easy a development as they though and it did throw up a few problems but the Frogs rather than admit a cockup quietly paid the money and carried on. When was the last time the UK did that.

I suspect that if we were to go for a proper plane for the new carriers the F18 may be a better bet.

There are quite a few diversions from the truth in this, ( see Harrier 2+ and WWW.Pprune.org/militaryaircrew for details) but the bit about " I'll be retired so it will be SEP - Someone Elses' Problem - is the most truthful and telling of the lot !!!

As it seems the moderators in their infinite wisdom are n't allowing a link, google 'Two Johns Admirals Sketch' on youtube - well worth it - sad but true, and I defy anyone watching not to laugh,!
