Hitching a ride across the Atlantic

Re: Thanks

Huurrruuphhtt!

Ladies and Gentlemen
What we have here is the longest most down to earth, thought provoking, cynical, comical and clinical thread that the liverboard forum has seen for a long time.
I would therefore like if I may to take time out to thank all the participants so far.

Steve Fox ….. A lad who graduated from a sponsored egg and spoon race to a realization that he could have a 7 year sponsored trip around the world, so far so good, then someone told him that the Atlantic Ocean was in the way so he appeared on here to tell us and try and hitch a ride, so far he hasn’t done to well, perhaps he was a little over ambitious with the trip to the south pole and lost credibility, or was it when he started asking for money, perhaps he should now just settle for something more reasonable like an accent of Everest on his bike playing the bagpipes.

TCM ……… our master of ceremonies and resident git,
Always at hand to guide the proceedings along gave us words of wisdom like,

Getting exercise might be vital in the west, but not a top requirement in parts of africa where it's a 20mile walkfor water, see?
Wwe're a *bit* serious, but not too serious.
i vote this thread as having received amongst the most useless (yet extensive) responses to a perfectly reasonable initial request.
I`m not apologizing to anyone so [oops] the lot of ya!! (Well actually he didn’t say that but he should have).

UncleAlbert………Takin the piss? well yes, but I would do that anyway even if he was genuine, after all this is an internet forum not a court of law.

Simon CR… the star of the show who came on the scene with a stern warning to Steve saying,
“it`s some people just passing the time of day by spouting without engaging brains first”
This turned out to be a perfect description of his behavior over the next two days.
Yes it`s got to be a special thanks to Simon. The man with no ears and the master of the understatement, who blessed us with such gems as,
“I think we all agree that the Antarctica bit is dumb, and demonstrates a hazy grasp of geography.”
“He's human after all! Guess couriering the bike would be necessary.”
“I don't find the bit about having him got the idea from his plan to cycle to see friends and family odd at all.”
Then there was the bitchy phase when after searching through the bios he said,
“Probably you're right. No doubt when he gets back from his trip he'll sink into a humdrum existence as a commercial software engineer, or heating specialist or whatever and will spend the rest of his life trawling internet forums handing out unrequested bitter advice to those having a more fun time.”

Eventually he went to melt down
“Didn't notice me being unreasonable! No can't find anything about 7 years on his website. He does mention 7 continents - I always thought there were about 5, but maybe he's counting Australia and errr... separately.”

Then there was that nice lady who voted for the lame duck.
Good luck with the swifgig ashtrays Sara, how much are they?

Thanks to all I haven`t mentioned but times short.

And an extra special thanks to;
Maria .. who sobered up specially to come here today, then summed the whole thing up in three paragraphs --- perfectly.

So there you have it a great thread that brought 2 great men to their Knees
TCM apologized for something he didn`t do. And SimonCr admitting the lad was after aII only after a jolly.

Me, I’ve vowed to give up takin the piss, er, oneday -

wink wink.

Re: hitching a trip

ignor them steve. even if you accomplish part of of what you set out to do at least your following your own dream. people like T alk C rap M ostly sometimes tend to take the piss rather than offer constructive advice but if you are to do this you will have to rise above people like this. good luck.

Re: Thanks

Ooh... ooh, vindictive isn't the word! For some reason The Jungle Book comes to mind. I think Shere Khan's sidekick, the jackal, was called Tabaqui?

Still wondering where you got this idea from that Steve intends to take 7 years? Last time I asked you, you were unable to point to it on his website. But never mind.

He said it himself on this forum......."over the course of 7 years or so, think of all the people ill talk to all over the world."

It's in one of his posts. Maybe you missed it. Never mind.

Note....."7 years or so" . It could take longer!

Re: Thanks

Got it! I agree that that's a very long time. Presumably it's because he will have to stop and work in countries as he goes along to finance the eating bit. There are plenty of world cruisers on yachts who are also sailing round the world taking many years.

Re: Thanks

You're missing the point. I don't think that he has indicated anywhere that he intends to earn his keep as he goes along. He is hoping to get sponsorship for his trip. I think the idea is that someone pays, he plays!

No, maybe that's where the misunderstanding arises. He makes it very clear that he's only asking for sponsorship for the equipment that he's going to use (quotes from his website: ("I am looking for equipment to help me complete my trip. Things like a bike, panniers, sleeping bag, tent and other neccesities are what I am looking for." or "Ultimately, the only things I have left to do is get sponsored by various companies for equipment, buy what equipment I have to, sort out some paper work issues, and go. "))

He also makes it clear that he was originally planning to stop and work in the Carribean for a year to help fund the ride (yes, it's true, on a resort set up by his mother, but so what?). Presumably he intends to do the same as he goes along. It's not such a crazy plan: work in each continent for a while to pay for the next leg.

Re: Thanks

I'm certainly not going to waste time trawling through his site to see whether or not he intends to do as you say.

If you think it's such a good idea why don't you put your money where your mouth is and sponsor him? /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Re: Thanks

You'll just have to take my word for it that there isn't anywhere on his website (that I can see, but it's not a big site) that he asks for cash. Nor does he ask for cash for the fund he's supporting - he says he's trying to raise awareness of it.

It seems from his site that he's looking primarily towards equipment manufacturers for sponsorship. He warns potential sponsors: "Please note though, any reviews that I give for equipment will be completely honest. If something is not to the standard for a multi-year trip like mine, I will say so."

'fraid I don't have a spare bike, though - mine was bent into the shape of a banana during the last house move /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

As of now, the only thing that is preventing me from propelling me around the world is my funds. I cannot pull together enough funds and equipment by myself, which is why I need to get sponsored. Sponsorship of either money or equipment will be very helpful to me and will make this trip possible.

Sponsorship of either money or equipment ????
.
You`re wasting your time Joe.

Re: Take your word for it ??

I know.

I've seen so many requests for sponsorship in my working life and very few of them are worthwhile. Some are worthwhile, but not appropriate fror various reasons. Once in a blue moon you come across something that's worth persuing. All too often the applicant either forgets that you need a good commercial reason to support it, or they simply promise the earth (literally in this case!) but are not able to justify their claims.

This one is laughable.

Re: Take your word for it ??

Just goes to show one should never take someone's word for it but check for yourself! He mentions nothing about funds on his sponsorship pages, which only talk about equipment, so I missed the bit you quoted. I concede defeat, he wouldn't say no to some dosh.

But from what I've read so far, he sounds like an interesting guy who I wouldn't mind going for a drink with, whereas you sound like... Let's just say that he scores higher /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: Take your word for it ??

Latest update on Steve's site is that the Ladies Sewing Club are supplying him with panniers.
Now all we need to do is stuff them full of money. And I do think that he needs money. He sounds broke. The only thing stopping him is 'lack of funds'. Well, lack of funds stops me from doing things too, but instead of starting off with a dream big enough to daunt even Lance Armstrong, I start off small. This small being a thing called common work! You then save some money, spend more time on your website so that that potential sponsors don't fall asleep every three lines and voila, your trip of 7 years or more starts in a way that has people thinking, 'good on ya......way to go.......keep me updated'. As it is, I think that half this forum are waiting for the Ten O'clock news to finish up the night with a story about some frozen remains and a bike found somwhere to the far left of Chile.

Re: Take your word for it ??

You really must choose your drinking companions more carefully! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Shake

Awl! come on Simon, I didn’t mean to upset you, now you’re making me feel bad, Give us a smile, I’d be glad to have a drink with you and watsisname anytime (er. would I have to go in the bar?).
I admire the way you stuck up for him but be fair even you agreed he was chancing his arm.
Anyway, I`m sure we’ll meet again on here and hopefully next time we’ll be on the same side.

all the best

Re: hitching a trip

But his chances of setting off won't have been helped at all by having been ridiculed on a public forum.

Nah. Anyone with any knowledge of truly motivated people, and he will have to be truly motivated for the task he is contemplating, will know that if the guy has the grit to do it then all this thread stuff will only have strengthened his resolve to prove us all (well all but one) wrong.

So, if he has the grit he will become even more determined. If he hasn't got the grit he will stay home in mummy's bar. In both cases he will thank us for it /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif.
