Hiring EPIRBs

Anyone know where to hire a 406 EPIRB for a week or 2 in the UK? Service is available in US, but can't find it here.

Last I heard was that it was tricky due to the registration requirements - also technically requires a station licence, I believe.

Premium Liferaft Services do them, I'm not sure what the minimum hire period is. They also register them for you (I think). Tel 01621 784858.

Yes an EPIRB does require a Radio Licence (either an Aircraft or Ship) being that it can only be carried by a ship or a plane.

I would also suggest registering it directly with the MCA's EPIRB Registry, tel No. = 01326 211 569

Pleased to see my arcane knowledge was correct. What really makes me titter is that radars should also be on the licence (I know - they are by their very nature radio emitters etc etc) - but it does seem odd in this day and age.

The licensing of EPIRBS I can see is vitally important from a SAR perspective - you need to know which skip on which lorry has just gone into panic mode...

Thank you Indalo. Premium Liferaft had one available which I've rented.

At £75 plus VAT for 4 weeks, I think that makes a sensible alternative to forking out min £500 to buy a device I really ony need for a couple of weeks a year.
