On my boat, at the stern there is a little plate indicating the following number: 6862 B G 1994.
The boat is from 1994, so that's quite obvious.
Is this the Hull Identification number?
Does it say anything about the CE Classification, about the type of water the boat is approved for?
Any wise comments are, as usual, highly appreciated! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Convention calls for the HIN to be marked on the starb'd side of the transom. First part is serial number BG is makers ident and yes the last is year of manufacture. It has nothing to do with CE marking which did not apply in 1994

The RCD CE compliancy stuff wasn't introduced until 1998

The French were applying RCD type categories to yachts back in the 80's. In 1987 I met a French yachtsman in the Cape Verde’s who had sailed there in his "not more than 20 miles offshore" rated yacht.

In GB the RCD requires a vessel (subject to relevant dates) to carry a plate and also to have a HIN number inscribed into the hull.

The plate must show certain things, including the manufacturer (or the manufacturers authorised rep in the relevant country if the manufacturer is outside the EU), the rated number of people, max weight etc. This includes the category rating under the RCD. Bear in mind that both Category C and Category D can be self-rated by the manufacturer.

The Hull ID No (HIN) is constructed according to a formula set by the British Marine Federation and represents country of (first) sale, manufacturer, year of manufacture, month of manufacture and the serial number for the specific vessel within that month. (The code for the manufacturer is agreed with the BMF, whether or not they are EU based, and is usually simply the initials of the business.).

A new boat sold under the RCD must also have an Owners Manual which should incporate a Declaration of Conformity with the Directive. This will also state the category rating and give some of the info on which that rating is based. This should stay with the boat when/if sold on. The DoC is signed by the manufacturer.

So your number could't be a HIN within the meaning of the RCD, although it might be a specific ID for that vessel in some other system, possbily specific to the builder.
