Having looked at a boat today I was confused to see the hin number started with gb when the boat was made in Italy, also there is no evidence of a the hin on the boat, only on paperwork which seems to be in good order.
The boat is a 1997-98 but does not have a ce plate. the boat was supplied new by a U.K. Dealer and has evedence to back this up and is vat paid
Is this normal for a boat of this age?

HIN and CE only became compulsory in 1998 so that boat could be pre the introduction date when there was no standardised HIN (although most big builders did use the recognised format) and CE marking was not EU law.

Have a look at the original documentation as it should include a Certificate of Conformity if it is CE marked. The HIN is likely to be on the starboard side either the transom or just in front.

The HIN for any Cranchi boat MUST start with "IT-CRA", and I very much doubt that even before CE they used something starting with "GB".
It sounds to me as the UK importer used their own classification of some sort.
Before CE, the Italian (RINA) classification for pleasure boats was either within 12NM from the coast or unlimited.
By heart, I would say that back in 1997 the larger Cranchi was the Mediterranee 41 - unlikely to be classified unlimited.
But I'm just guessing, and it's all irrelevant for you now...
