I don't think it's the kids at all. It's the parents..if little Tommy gets blown over or hit by a flying roof tile..the parents sue the school, Education authority, owner of the roof and if they can the wind Gods.. Oh! and the Met office just for good measure...Cheaper to shut the school.:D

Probaly right, school bus was blown over today less than 2 miles from my house right across 2 lanes of the road and the road closed for hours waiting recovery. Luckily no kids on board. Just imagine if there had been.

How quickly you all forget-well this is being typed by candlelight!-phones are on and exchange has a standby geni.Been without power since 15.00 yesterday.
Its sub zero outside and snowing.
Luckily having lived here for 12 years I have a little standby geni ;a big gravity fed multifuel stove at one end of house and a gas cooker at the other.
Having said that with no central heating pump its like the tropics here upstairs and little above plus 10 in middle room of our house.
The fun of the Highlands in winter!

It doesn't only happen where the haggis roam you know...my girlfriend lives in a village in West Sussex where there is no gas, and the electricity is often out if it blows more than F6.

She once had a power cut for 6 weeks and cooked with a cauldron over the open fire; I should have heeded that warning ! :)

Most rural areas get hit, but I think ffill is winning at the mo.

We have paraffin lights, big fat candles plus a candle hanging light fitting, solid fuel, bulk lpg, portable lpg fires, solar panels & a small genny.

Flexibility is the key, can you move lights & heaters around? How much can you live in a single room? Is the power off at the pub too, & if not can you reach it thro the drifts? :D

Power was off at the pub yesterday, but very busy; business as usual- gas lights on the bar, and hot food being served. Ony drawback, and a big one in Scotland- no chips! The deep fryer is electric.

Boy Scout attitude !! Be prepared. You have to be in the Highlands.
You got a genny so why not do a simple & quick rewire and run your CH from it ??
Could make a perm set up so you can just switch power supply to genny.

Bought the generator to do work on boat so only 600 watts which happily runs lights;freezer and fridge.
I do have a naughty wire plugged at both ends so after isolating the mains tried it-not enough wattage to fire up pump-blew the trip.
One thing we have not got-but on its way- is a portable calor heater.
Candles are one of the simplest but most sophisticated light source if you thing about it.A single standard candle is quite alright to read by contains its own unspillable fuel suppy and a means of vapourising it .
Its two days now but suspect we are off so that larger neighbouring communities can remain on-suggestion that main grid pylon/wire has gone somewhere.
Mind you our neighbours geni is annoying-he always has big and best of everything-sounds diesel capable of running cooker etc.-mines gas his is electric.
Oh well and its still below freezing and snowy.
