Laser out in Plymouth!

Just got back from Mountbatten (Plymouth) and there was a guy out for a blast in his Laser, he'd never been as fast and it looked like fun. He was the only sail boat to be seen and I'd guess the gusts were up to the 30knt + area. Dartcom had max 36knt gust on the moors.

Average gusts 33mph at lake level (Lowwood Marina)

In Penrith they had
Maximum Gust (since 9am) 53.2 mph at: 11:34 Maximum 1 minute average (since 9am) 34.2 mph at: 12:09
So the average gusts are pretty meaningless.

At St Bees Head the maximum gust has been 55mph.

Lake District Weatherline for today:
Maximum winds above 500m: West or Southwest 50 to 70,
gusts to around 100mph over ridges and summits with the
risk of being blown over

I went down to check the boat in Troon this afternoon but didn't hang around. The noise was incredible.

The boat was being blown off the pontoon fortunately - and the fenders were being blown out the water onto the deck. Never seen that before...

Well the wind is really getting up here.

Just been outside to check a few things and it was hard to stand up.

Now I really wish I had bought that handheld anemometer.

We were right in the eye of the storm earlier and it was relatively calm, but now the pressure is rising fast.

Melting snow and flooding just to make it interesting.

Better sharpen my chainsaw chain, as there's bound to be rich pickings of firewood this weekend.

Here in West Sussex it's nothing compared to what Scotlands's getting of course, but the wind outside my S facing window just went up to a steady roar, the sound I normally only hear briefly in gusts !

The last time I heard anything like this was in October 1987, but hopefully we're still a long way away from that...

Power went at 15.00 hrs-so house on standby geni-a good quality Chinese 600 watt £50 machine!-hearing on big multifuel cooking on gas-only problem is the water-its pumped out of Loch Ness up to a conccrete treatment plant /header tank.
Having said that the River Moriston is almost on full flood with sluices fully open on hydro dam-so much for renewables!
Oh yes and its tipping it down-sleaty rain.
Wind took a few trees but not as bad as this time last year when it ripped up whole sections of pine and spread them liberally about.
Glasgow weather centre finally mentioned the Boxing Day night storm 1998-140 recorded at Prestwich. We were without power on Bute for four days and whole of Clyde coast was out until next day.
Never forget seeing nothing down coast towards Ayr other than lighthouses and beacons-all the cities were out from Greenock down.Neither forget the screaming roar above our roof on Canada Hill.My old boat survived being wellied by a catermaran in Rothesay Inner Harbour where as I recall it was a high tide over the harbour wall and into the town centre.
This here in Great Glen was nothing compared to that.

I don't think it's the kids at all. It's the parents..if little Tommy gets blown over or hit by a flying roof tile..the parents sue the school, Education authority, owner of the roof and if they can the wind Gods.. Oh! and the Met office just for good measure...Cheaper to shut the school.:D
