i thought something was predicted to happen around canaries (earthquake, volcano) that would cause a tsunami that affected uk, or were the catastrophe mongers at it again.

There is a theory it could happen but it needs half of one of the islands to fall into the sea to make it happen, but of course any earthquake which affects the sea can cause a tsunami.

There is also predictions of a big one going off in Iceland too so could be an interesting winter

I think you are referring to the NE ridge on Tenerife which is expected to break away . The volcanic ridge has a series of dykes which hold water that in the event of volcanic activity would turn to high pressure steam which would cause the western side to slide into the sea . It is supposed to have happened before .

The port (fishing village) of La Restinga is currently completely closed to all boats (and aircraft overflying). This has been widely reported in the recent press:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencet...evacuated-Spains-southern-Canary-Islands.html

http://www.ibtimes.com/articles/231...uption-canary-islands-canaries-sea-stains.htm

And fully evacuated. Residentsa are allowed in during the day on a strictly-controlled basis. Must leave before nightfall. All seems very relaxed, as you would expect with an evacuation that is really a precaution, not against a grave and imminent danger. Staying overnight is obviously not on, as anything that might happen with the population asleep complicates matters, as does the darkness.

Wherever it is in the Canaries it is on the W coast and facing the E coast of the USA. Whether and if so how much it would affect the UK pales into insignificance compared to the damage it could do to the E Seaboard of the US.
Predictions can't always be taken at face value but if the big one happens - the whole side of a mountain rising from the deep slumping into the abyss the consensus is for 30 - 40m waves to strike from Florida to Newfoundland. NY, Washington, Philadeplhia, Boston, Miami and many other cities would be all but eradicated, Bermuda, Florida and most of the Caribbean completely wiped out, floods up to 100 miles inland. Deaths towards a hundred million quite feasible...Travel time would be a few hours, nowhere near enough time to evacuate even a fraction of the population. The generations alive when this happens will see large parts of the Western world catapulted back into the dark ages - and the worlds entire economy destroyed for many decades, if not more. Not a pleasant prospect.
Don't suppose the Thames Barrier would be much help.
