Hi I am going to be going to get a 1969 Westerly cruiser22 and I am in sw London wandsworth and was hoping to get her from Kent to me in the rivers but I have not been on a Yacht for a long time and was hoping to Moore her down buy me to do some work on her and get the kids on her and then take her out to France next year but I have never owned a boat I just went out one my dads and ret one for a bit and I am feeling lost so I think I am seeking help with what I will need to take her on rivers and to sea from the start thanks I fell so dum

Well the first thing to do is learn to sail properly, second is to study and pass at least the RYA coastal skipper course.
Once you have done all that you might be ready to cross the channel, but it's a very dangerous place and I suggest you have up to date navigation equipment on board as well as a life raft and flares, just in case of trouble. VHF radio should go without saying and you need to pass a test to operate it, you need to ask permission to sail through the Thames barrier, contact Woolwich radio. The boat also needs a licence for VHF.
one other thought, if the mast is on will it go under tower bridge? I expect it will because it's a small boat.
good luck and don't be put off by all this it's for you own safety!

Hi again, don't worry about your spelling, my daughter also has dyslexia. You can take an RYA course at any stage of life! The reason I suggest this is because too many people go out to sea without any kind of knowledge at all and get themselves into all sorts of trouble! If you feel you have enough experience then fine but you will still need a VHF licence and that involves taking a test, but don't worry it's fairly easy and if you tell them about your dyslexia I'm sure you will be given help.
You will need all the safety gear I've already mentioned and you must know how to use it all? At the moment there are no laws stopping you crossing the channel in a bath tub, but it's in your own interest to know how to do it safely. The more people who get in trouble at sea the more ammunition they have for laying down new laws on us all!

Get to know your boat and be safe!

Hi

As the Westerly 22 is a sail boat, you might be better off asking for help on Scuttlebutt http://www.ybw.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?16-Yachting-Monthly-s-Scuttlebutt You might be able to find a crew there to help with your delivery trip.

Or if you need help fixing / maintaining the boat the PBO forum is your place. http://www.ybw.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?13-Practical-Boat-Owner-s-Reader-to-Reader

Just to clarify the ships radio licence is free, and you need to do the VHF short range course to get your personal radio operators licence.

Hi Scoobyman

Whatever happens don't be put off, it can all seem a bit daunting at first. I only got my first boat earlier this year and whilst I got some sound advice and plenty of help off of this site I also got my fair share of abuse for being new. You have been lucky so far and all I can say is take note of the advice regarding safety. I spent a fortune on safety equipment when I got mine and it was all put to use on Sunday. Had an engine fire and lost all power in the middle of the Thames, luckily nobody was hurt but was I grateful for having plenty of life jackets, fire extinguishers and emergency numbers stored. I'm keen to do the day skipper course and radio myself and am only across the river from you in Hammersmith so if you'd find it easier pairing up, let me know.

P.S. ProDave...Any advice on where and how to get radio license? TIA
