Hi All,

Well it’s been about 15 yrs since my last post, is that a record??. My previous forum name was RDL but can’t remember my password and my email address has changed so I’ve had to re register. I had a Fairline Targa37 based in Sparkes Marina from 2003 to 2007. I’m now looking to start boating again but so many things have changed over the past 15 years and I feel like a novice again. It’s good to see that there are a few friends still boating and some familiar names still on the forum. Sadly some people that I knew back then have sadly passed away.

Things that have changed for me….

The Demise of Sealine.
The demise and re birth of Fairline.
Midships cabins
V drives
IPS drives
Joy stick controllers
Remote control thrusters.
Brexit and VAT status
Galeon??? Where did they come from??
To name a few off the the top of my head.

I’m looking to purchase a 50-56ft flybridge. Preferably a princess 50,54,52 or 56. Will be based in the solent and having re looked at most Marinas, we like Swanwick. I would appreciate your thoughts and or any experiences with these models. Not many of these available at the moment but hopefully at the end of the season some may become available. I am a little concerned about jumping straight into something this large but plan to have some intensive own boat tuition when the time comes. Regarding this, can anyone here recommend a trainer/instructor?? I would like to have a week’s own boat tuition for myself and SWEMBO. Do you think a 56ft boat in the solent is too big in terms of casual moorings at the weekend, booking ahead etc. THanks.

Welcome back RDL!(y)
I reckon because you had the Targa , you will probably find a larger twin shaft vessel no problem pretty quickly
Would love to come and help you with The Boaty stuff but there lots of good peeps down your way when it comes to kinda Re -Training
Can't comment on the Solent and mooring etc
Been on a few Princess 50 odd footers but I wouldnt rule out tothers like Fairlines and Seekers
Yeh, since the Covid unlocking boats (and other leisure items) have been selling fast, thats for sure!
Slowly catch a monkey I would suggest right now
Look at as many as you can
I don't know where pricing is going , lots of peeps I meet doing my boaty stuff seem to think that prices might crash in due course
Buggered if I know!!
Personally I would stick with shafts
Maybe I am a bit old fashioned but from experience IPS and other fancy kit just , well, they frighten me to be honest!:eek::giggle:
Good Hunting Sir!

Welcome back. HenryF on this forum has a lovely P50. I‘m sure he would be happy to share knowledge and experience. While he dies visit the forum, it is occasional so a pm might work?

Thanks for your comments so far. When the MODS lets me PM I'll send Henryf a message. I would like to stay with shafts but that technology looks like its thinning out a little. for example, in a few years time when you may want to jump into a used 50ft princess flybridge, you will have go up to the F55 to stay with shafts. You will have no choice any smaller than that. Technology is great but when it fails..... example, my car has just been towed to the dealer because it will not recognize my key (keyless start). So, Engine is fine, battery is fine, electrics fine, but "computer Says No!!

Welcome back.
you might find the Aquaholic video “meet the owner”Nick Whale helpful. He explains some things about his P56. I think the 56 as well as the 52 are cracking boats. Fantastic space and on shafts.
enjoy the search.

Ericj, I have watched that video of the 56 many times. It really is a stunning boat with a fantastic layout with no compromises. Galley up with a dinette and lots of social space in the saloon. 3 double cabins below with a huge mid ships master. I spent a good couple of hours on a 52 a few weeks ago with the owner. That again is lovely and would tick all boxes for us. However, the perfect one my never come up which is whyI've widened my search to the 50, 52, 54, 56.
