Hi everyone.

I though I managed to post my first thread last night but I don think I pressed the right key. Upsssss!

So, I have been thinking of joining this forum after I have read a lots of your posts and finally gathered the courage to register last night.

I do not own a boat yet, however, I am working on it and will see my first boat on Saturday and the second one on Sunday. I have a Sealine 215 Envoy and a Fairline 21 Sprint in mind. Both looks pretty good on the advert and I guess once I see them on the flesh, do a small see/river trial and make my mind I will pull the trigger and get the survey on the way.

Any particular issue I should be wary of in any of the two or preferences?

Anyway, I leave you all in peace.
Thank you all and sabe boating.

A very warm welcome to the forum. Exciting times for you, looking for your first boat. The key for you will be how well the engine and drive have been maintained on any boat of this type. The hull and fittings can be sorted out reasonably easily, but engines and drives need good mechanical knowledge. Other than that, which do you prefer? These a both great starter boats. Where do you plan to use your new boat, coastal or river? Trailer or mooring? Anyway, very best wishes.

Welcome to the forum, good luck with the search for a boat, I have a Sealine 218 which is essentially a 215 with a few changes, it met all my requirements, most important one being stern too access, its no fun climbing over so stern door was top priority.
Keep us informed of progress.

Condition is far more important than age ,good luck
I could not agree more. She looks a bit different on the pictures, I guess when they were taken she was fully furnished an clean, one since the carpet, cushions and other interior bits have been storaged for the winter she looks different. One thing I notice is that on the adver you cannot see the name but when I saw her today it is clearly visible (odd)

I have also noticed that the propeller has a small bit missing on one of the edges, not big, just about 2 cm, is that something that will require replacing or can she function perfectly fine like that?
Thank you for your advice as well.
Kind regards,
Anibal

Sites like Boatshed blur out the name for some reason

That is interesting, they may have some sort of policy or legal requirement for doing this. In my case on the pictures it look like the name was never there.
Thank you for the info btw, I have learnt a new thing today.
Kind regards,
Anibal

Chances are that it will vibrate a bit but props can usually be repaired and it won't break the bank. I imagine you could take a photo and send it to http://www.steeldevelopments.net/ for a repair cost.

As well as a service, you might want to get an engineer to take a look at the engine and drives as this won't be covered in too much detail in a survey.

Good luck!

Pete

Thank you Pete, that is a good advice.
I will do so and also get an engineer to have a look at the drive and engine.
I would also like to be present when the survey is done as I would like to ask the poor fella any questions that may come to mind there and then. This is all new to me and I an very keen to learn as much as possible and as quick as possible. I am really looking forward getting all done with and as soon as she is ready launch her where she belongs.
Kind regards,
Anibal

Thank you Rafiki, indeed I am well excited about it, bit nervous too as this is all new to me and I hope I make the right choice. The boat has some small marks, tipical of her age and other cosmetic DIY bits that perhaps could have been sorted a bit better but, I am not concerned about them. The engine was replaced 5 years ago and looks in very good condition, no sign of rust or leaks inside the housing, however, she is on dry stack at the moment. Saying this, that gave me the chance to have a look at her underneath and the drive. I could not see anything that would be obvious to the untrained eye, apart from what may look like an anode close to the propeller that looks like needs replacing. This bit, about 3/5 inches long looked different to the rest of the drive and the surface looked like the surface of the moon, covered in little holes/pores and the propeller itself has a small bit missing like a 2 cm bite in one of the blades. Apart from that, I think it is all there. I was thinking after the survey is done and I am happy with it, to have everything that needs fixing done while she is out and then take it for a sea/river trial. Any major issue or money needed to replace or fix any problem will need to be reflected on the price. This is if I decide to go for her.
Kind regards,
Anibal

Thank you Aquapower for your welcome and kind wishes.
I think for a first boat it ticks all the boxes. I found her to be a bit tight inside the cabin but I guess this is the first impression and once I get used to it I won't even notice it.
She has a Volvo Penta 4.3 GL with 190 hp. Is this the same engine you have? If so, what sort of fuel consumption should I expect from her? I heard that petrol is a bit difficult to obtain on the Medway/Southeast region.
Best regards,
Anibal

I had an AQ205 V6 which is almost identical to what you have looked at, the engine was also replaced a couple of years before I bought her as its important to winterise these engines to prevent the block cracking and often they don't get drained, a few years back at work we fitted 6 new engines in one winter due to cracked blocks.
At planing speeds expect to burn about 8 gallons an hour and river speeds about 1 gallon per hour, this isn't as bad as it sounds as you can cover quite a distance in an hour. I have removed V6 now and am in the process of fitting a KAD32 as I managed to find one for a sensible price.

Yes welcome to the forum M1800R
The boys are all right get it inspected well.
I had a 218 with the 205 V6 and as Aquapower said about 8 gallons an hour.
I kept the boat for 10 years. I looked after it, and It looked after me.
It was reasonably cheap to run and fix, and would be an ideal starter boat.
Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Hi, and thank you for your welcoming.
I am all over the place because on the pictures the boat looks fantastic but on the day I went to view her it was raining and it has been on dry stack for 9 months and I think it has a bit of murck and dirt on top. I like to think that a good scrub will do the trick. The engine is literally new and the drive may need a bit of tic judging by the outer appearance, but this is maybe me. The propeller will need refurbishment or replacing as it has a small bite in one of the blades. The boat felt smaller in the cabin that I thought but I guess I will get used to it if I go for her. The dealer said that he arranged for their local surveyor to have the survey done for £300.00 and although I appreciate it, I rather have an independent surveyor to avoid any conflict of interest, don't want to sound ungrateful but I have been burned once. Glad to hear she should be relatively cheap to run and fix. I was thinking to have the engine and drive inspected and serviced by an engineer before the season starts. Do you think I am being paranoid?
Anyway, of to bed now, it has been a long day for me.
Kind regards and thank you again for all the advises.

As you say a couple of days polishing and varnishing can work wonders. And some new soft furnishing / carpets can transform a boat.

Usually best to arrange your own survey but might be worth telling us who the broker recommended as he might stil be ok? A pre season service is an excellent idea.
