Heybridge - tips please

I live in the Basin, so not too much partying, it disturbs the locals;). No local shops just 2 pubs, Tesco has a jetty so you can tender (or walk) up to get provisions about 1.5 miles up the canal.

Enjoy

Phone lock-keeper in advance if poss (number is in ECP) but if you can't get him, turn up before high water and hang about outside. Locking only takes place around high water. Will be pretty busy in this weather, so best to get hold of him if you can.
Withies to port on the way in. Lots of helpers in the lock to take lines.
A laid-back sort of place. Be prepared to be rafted out. You could even end up berthed in the lock itself if the place is full.
Barbecue area beyond the loo block.
Two pubs, the Ship and the Jolly Sailor. The former gets all the attention but IMHO the beer in the other one is (much) better. Decent Tiptree cafe on the sea wall close by.
As Uncle Albert said, dinghy up the canal to Tesco, or a shorter trip walking to Heybridge itself where there are two smaller supermarkets (along the towpath, up onto the road at the second bridge you reach, turn right and they are on the left).
Plenty of good walking upstream/downstream, into Maldon etc.

I have my drum kit on board, I look forward to entertaining you when I get thrown out of the pub!

Martin is top bloke and now has a radio too. Ch80.

He said there were 36 going in today. So I assume the OGA.

Grest place, is now on my list of faves.

Avoid the pub on the corner, go to Jolly Sailor. beer is 10p dearer, but is proper. Weekend sees BBQ and Seafood stalls.
Do not miss going up the canal rowing. No tide, and little wind effect means progress both ways.

Showers/Toilets good, if not many of them. Laundry also there.

Water available, but have extra length of hose and connectors.
Leccy by pay card.

Rafting normal

Cloggies in abundance

I have to be slightly picky about "no tide" in the canal. This is of course accurate, however there is a significant flow of water down the canal, enough to make a slight difference with an outboard and I think you would notice it if you were rowing an inflatable?

That said our trip each year up the canal is one of our East Coast favourites, lots of wildlife, dragonflies birds and even grass snakes swimming in the canal a few times.

And if your really lucky that not so rare sight of an enthusiastic black labrador swimming after the ducks:)

A great place, went down well with both wife and the kids who went to tescos' in the dinghy at every opportunity. Showers probably the best in any Marina on the East Coast, Martin a delightful bloke, all very friendly.
Week was windy with strong wind warnings everyday, so hid in Bradwell for a day and Brightlingsea for a couple of others, with most of the Old Gaffers, I like gaffers, but not keen on the people who sail them, at least the ones i came across, still had a good time with the family.

The showers are not bad since they renovated them last year, but "best on the East Coast?", I can't agree, Chatham and Tidemill are way better in every respect.

I base it on water pressure, temperature control and space in the cubicle. Haven't been to Chatham and the tide mill wasn't much when I used them last but that was 3 years ago
