Here's a handy tip

windlass wire

if you want to fit a windlass command from the cockpit and have to lead an elecrical wire from the cockpit mom-off-mom switch to the windlass at the bow, dismantling, screwing/unscrewing half the accomodations of the boat to thread the wire...

be sure it is a tri-polar cable instead of a bipolar one

On shore getting dinghy ready to get to swinging mooring, wellys on and dinghy motored over to mooring, load boat from dinghy, get on board, take wellys off, 'where's me shoes' ???. look everywhere, in all the bags, and have to go back to the shore to find shoes where i'd left them.

When a crew member cannot finish his meal do not tell him to "throw it over the side". Or, if you do, tell him that you expect the plate and cutlery back for washing up!!!!

Not boaty...

If the thermostat housing breaks on your Mk3 Polo (as they are wont to do), and you buy a new one on eBay, together with a bottle of very expensive VW purple coolant, and you undo the bottom radiator hose (splashing coolant everywhere) and you drain it out, and you take the hoses off the housing, and you take the cover of the housing off, and you put in a new thermostat for good measure because it came with the kit, and you have a bugger of a job getting the thermostat to engage in the housing as you replace it, and after eventually managing it you put the hoses back on the thermostat housing, and the bottom one back on the radiator, and you re-fill the coolant, and you run the car till it's warm to check it isn't still overheating, and you find it is....

...make sure you haven't accidentally re-fitted the broken part leaving the new one sitting on the wall next to the drive

Because you will have to drain everything down once more and do it again.

If you have overfilled the engine with oil and need to pump some out and you have a hand pump with a sort of hard plastic pipe that has a kink in it, don't think that'll be all right and shove it down the dip stick pipe as usual 'cos when it's time to pull it out the B****y thing will snap in two and leave a large piece of plastic pipe in the sump.

Also, if some prat has used ordinary cheap garden hose for the hot water system, replace it before it bursts under the pressure of the hot water and fills the heads making you think the boat has sprung a leak.
