Resurrecting this old theme, how do you get the front off the pump without destroying it?

On my plastic version remove the screws. If you mean the inspection hatch bit I knock the lugs with a lump of wood to start it moving and then unscrew.

Make sure the pressure's off before you unscrew.

Once it was the only way to release the pressure. I had waited a while as well !!

A tap with a block of wood, as Boathook suggests, should do the trick.
Otherwise, how about one of these? Handy to have anyway, for oil filters and the like.
