help with Zygrib forecasts

i was reading the post about weather forecasting in the greek area and a few people said how good zy grib was so i thought i would down load the programme for my self.

ok so

step 1:
I found it via google and downloaded it onto my net book , it took a while as Im working on a chase boat off Nigeria and the satelite system complains when you ask it to do anything !

Step 2:
Its a zipped file I didnt have a programme to unzip it so I downloaded winzip which was recommended and has indeed done the job, that also took for ever !

step 3:
Figured out how to open the Zygrib programme and a world map pops up on the screen , figured out that if i highlight an area i want info for i then hit the download button and a box opens up with the information choices i want downloaded.

step 4:
I hit the download button and i keep getting.... host not found ? I am connected to the web my email is working , i have tried over and over and it keeps doing the same thing ??

step 5:
So i go into the tab that says help and it says something like " we might email you back but i have better things to do with my time, just keep hitting buttons until you figure it out yourself you neanderthol ! ! which Ive tried and i cant get it to work

step 6:
lower head in shame post a "help" notice on the forum and wait for derisory comments and riddicule from forumites way more computer literate than me.

step 7:
delete all and go back to sticking head out of the window for a " nowcast".

what do i need to do to get it work ............grrrrr

ps I have all the specialst tools at the ready....hammer...mole grips...chissel

Click the "Server Status" button under "File" - it might tell you something useful. Also, check you have 'Direct connection to internet" checked, under "Options/Proxy Internet".

Or install Passage Weather which gives very similar information packaged better'. I have also used U Grib though some have problems with this service

ok tried the other website and that works ok

as for internet connection its currently set to direct internet access
im guessing then i need to change those settings ? ?

Unfortunately the NOAA site has changed its connection system and you need to be using zygrib 3.9.9.2.

This isn't yet up on the zygrib.org site, though I have it on both my Win boots - the Linux ones (ironically it's a Linux programme is still stuck with 3.9.9.1 and is having great difficulty getting the download.

To the original OP.

1. Click the globe. This will bring up a sub-menu
2. Adjust the Max/Min eastings and Northings - note there are no southings or westings, just -E or -N.
3. Fill in the boxes of the info you need, I just go for wind, pressure, temperature, isotherm, CAPE, cloud, precipitation & humidity.

Then click <<Download Grib file>> (making sure you've got an internet connection.
Only use the server status when you're going to carry out a big download exceeding 1MB (which you'll get if you download intermediates).

IF you know what you're doing there isn't anything else on the market to compare with its power and the latest downloads are QUICK.

It's easy enough to compile the Linux version yourself. Google around and you'll find sraightforward instructions. I was glad the source code was available, because I had to modify it slightly to run under Xandros.

zyGrib

I do not really understand the problems.

I have zyGrib 3.9.2. It works well. I downloaded from http://www.ziltmagazine.com/software/. Yes, it is zipped but there is a free WinZip version that works or the Win 7 built in unzipper. Or get a trial version of WinZip.

Use the magnify button to expand the map, move it with the arrow keys and drag an area. Choose your parameters. Choose a folder to save.

It is the same data as Ugrib but the software seems more robust and it has more data options, especially CAPE, better projections and map detail.

Being a GRIB file you will download far smaller files than on Passageweather which, again, has the same data. Importantly, having saved it you can refer to it later. Not easily possible with browser versions.

If you are strapped for bandwidth, use Saildocs and get the same by email attachment and use the repeat request facility. See http://weather.mailasail.com/Franks-Weather/Saildocs-Free-Grib-Files.

Zygrib will not work on my pre intel Mac. However Passageweather works well. And it seems to be easy to download the projections in a zip file. Your site is a great resource Frank.

Hi. I am not into Mac systems although I do know that zyGrib has a MacOS version but, I gather that you cannot use that.

I have no problems with the ease of use of Passageweather and give them an airing on my site. As someone who can be, and has been, often bandwidth limited. I just find Saildocs the most economic in practice with zyGrib and UGrib being more friendly but not quite as economic over GPRS/Edge. Also, I like to be able to compare yesterday with today. That is nearly impossible with browser versions eg Passagewather, XCWeather etc, weatheronline.co.uk.

As I have often said, they give the same data. It is all a question of ease of use. For Blue water use, zyGrib is not too bad over Iridium but, Saildocs via email over HF radio is cheaper - especially if you are a radio amateur or, next best probably, using sailmail.
