Help with radar

I bought a boat with a radar! I've sussed how to use it (i think) but I can't seem to get it to show any actual objects, other boats, land etc..

Can anybody tell me what's wrong please?

Gain, tuning, range, sea clutter, rain clutter, try those and see if they are adjusted correctly, tuning should, if it's a modern set, be automatic, check the setting is on auto. Read your manual for the other settings.

What type of radar is it?
Have you got the range set to something like 0.25 miles and there is nothing around you?
Some radars have a filter on them to filter out rain or high surf - if you have this set too high you could well be blocking out useful stuff.
I went through the same experience last year - I have dots but they were not lining up with the vertical line (my heading) and I found that there is a diagnostic mode to set this up.

Its very likely to be the gain control which is set to minimum or you're looking at the TV set not the radar. If all else fails, look at the manual.
