Dear Forum,

I'm hoping someone may be able to help me with findng out the type of gear box that I have, as I'm trying to work out how I can get it to work.

On my first outing on my boat, the propeller got caught in some rope that was attached to a car tyre and has basically stopped the propeller from turning.

The propeller will turn both in or out of gear when I push around by hand. Its not turning around the prop shaft, the shaft as I recall does turn, however when I start the engine and put in gear, there is no movement either forward or reverse.

Completely useless at mechanics, but just trying to establish possible causes. I have been told it might be a bolt that can shere off inside, but if I can get an idea of gear box type I may be able to find a usefull manual or at least make sure oil level is correct type, as been advised t make sure sufficient oil in gearbox as its a hydralic system.

Engine is a 2.2 BMC

Many thanks for your time, boat is at Langstone harbour.

Gear box is a newage prm I would guess a 160 it is hydraulic and uses engine oil dipstick is under big nut on the top . If the shaft turns freely and the selector is moving its full travel it could be low on oil or a oil pump issue. Forward and reverse are on seperate shafts so its unlikely to be both sets of clutches at same time.

Providing the oil and selector are correct I would expect it to be the torsional coupling between the flywheel and gearbox, more so if you wear in gear when the rope went around the prop , Gearbox off I am afraid

This gearbox has an emergency 'get you home' device, take off the lid and use a hex key to screw up the bolts on the ahead clutch. You would need the handbook. Also, if it happens to have the wrong handed prop fitted (It runs happily in either direction) you'll go home backwards.

It's a new age PRM 101 it predates the prm160, most of the spares are no longer available but I think you can still get the clutch plates, you can replace the box with a 160 or the later 260, it should fit straight on to the original back plate.

If it is low on oil it won't drive, I doubt that both sets of clutches are worn out, if its low on old pressure then that too will cause loss of drive as it relies on oil pressure to operate the clutch plates!

Check the oil, check to make sure the operating level is moving.
If the oil level is right, smell the oil, if it smells burnt then the clutches are probably worn out

Many thanks for all your help.

There is more than 1 problem, the first was easy to spot, in that the coupling that connects to the prop shaft was cracked in 2 places.

Checked the oil level, but found that this was all like cream, as water must have got in somewhere. Drained the oil out and replaced, but the flywheel on the back still wouldnt turn.

Will be going back to the boat again this weekend, is there anywhere to see if its a PRM101 or PRM160 as want to make sure that I get the correct oil.

Failing this, anyone know where to get a second gear box or is this able to be repaired. The cogs inside spin around freely, but a helpful mechanic at Langstone had explained that this will spin all day but obviously need to build up pressure to turn. Trying to get this mechanic to look at the boat, but understand that many are very busy this time of year, so your help has been most valubale. Thanks
