My volunteer to help do the boat next week has cried off. Well, his brother in law age 36 has suddenly died which is a bit awful. But the boating must go on!

So, i am looking for someone to help me on the boat. We bomb down to Antibes in a fast estate car full of self-adhesive copper sheet, overalls, antifoul remover and a spray gun. We stay in a b+b in antibes, and spend sunday geting the things we need off the boat into the car, and see the boat starts which it probaly will. Monday we take the boat 500 yards to the crane ready for liftout. They chock it off, then help me clean off the existing crap and epoxy when it's clean. Then praps tues or weds we start to stick on the copper, bit like rubbish wallpapering. Then we askem to re-chock the boat to do the gaps, and when thats done the crane plops it back in the water and all finished. Oh yes, there the anodes as well.

I spose i cd get some dayworker to help but he might be an idiot. So lemmee know if you or someone you know fancies it. Bout 120 sq metres of copper. But it is self-adhesive. Yes, i buy the beers, fuel, food and so on.

in the olden days all boats had copper sheeting to keep barnacles away. But the copper was expensive. sometimes more expensive than the boat. So they made paint full of excellent ghastly chemicals to do the same thing. But the paint kils other things too. So modern antifoul paint is less decent by law, and so doesn't keep off the barnacles, so i'm going back to the copper like what erm ooh The Cutty Sark has lots of, hence no barnacles, hence no antifoul needed, and the copper lasts maybe ten years. I get the money back in a bout two years cos of saving on lifts alone, never mind the blimmin painting.

Hmmm...sounds interesting...does it go green like a copper roof? How long will it last for? How much is it - or how much would it be for a Targa 40? Is it easy to fit over spray rails etc? Where do you get it from? Think that's it!

Sorry to go on, just interested/curious.

ps thought you were determined to have a black bottom, so to speak.

Yep it'll go greenish (but not as green as some roofs) and yep, i am/was determined to have black bottom but will sacrifice the colour in favour of zero barnacles. Supposed to last ten years. Foil-specialists in the midlands are the kiddies.

I would'nt employ the bugger. Turns perfectly decent slabs into crazy paving cos he's too mean to use proper skelpings .. you'd end up with a copper mache hull! Bet when AlisistairR was at school his woodwork was aye cockeye!

As a v. interested bystander, please ensure plenty of pics posted on forum showing disastrous results together with costs of professional rectification
So, how does this work then? Is the foil bendy or stiff and how is it fixed? 3" nails through the hull or something more high tech? What happens around the tricky bits like prop tunnels and bowthrusters? How is the foil shaped over spray rails on the hull? And now that there is a fantastic electrical connection between boat and water, are you concerned about being best lightning conductor in the Med?

There is a difference!!
What would you rather do? Gardening work, or Boating Work??

I know which i'd choose./forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Instead of copper, why don't you put 50knt engines in and blast them of when you take her out for a spin!! Mind you with engines capable of 50knts in your size of boat, You may need to tow a Tanker behind, or rob a bank../forums/images/icons/laugh.gif
