Dont forget that SSR requires you to measure the boat personally, and allows you to ignore things like transom rudders. V useful when French marinas want your SSR length for marina fees. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
My SSR certificate has a value for overall length of 1310.00 metres - sort of drives home the point that the SSR certificate is a bit of a joke. I thought for sure I would have trouble using it as an official document in the various countries we sailed but no-one questioned it!
I had the same problem. You can change the length of the boat or the number of hulls on line but you can't just do a simple renewal. It has to be by post. They should send you a reminder in the post and you just send that back with your cheque. If you haven't had a reminder then ring them up and they will send you one. From my experience I would recomend that you give them 3 to 4 weeks notice.
Yes, that's because you made changes. But there is no facility that I can see for simply renewing without changing one or more details of the vessel or owner, which is a glaring ommission on the part of the web site designer, as I would think there are more renewals than any other category of business; unless none of us keep our boats for more than five years (I dunno-maybe it's not so crazy an idea after all)!
So if I had changed the length by 0.01m at the same time I could have renewed it on line. Then 5 years later change the length back again. I suppose thats what you call a work around.
Our SSR expired in January, we didn't spot it because they didn't send a reminder.
I say a post on this group that prompted me to check ours and I was shocked to see it was out of date. We called them about a late renewal and they said we had to apply again, but that we could keep the old number - said that it would be 3-4 weeks to get it back
Five weeks ago we sent our application off but by the end of last week we still hadn't received our new SSR. We chased them up and at first they said they told us they had lost the papers and we would have to start again, but they eventually found them and said they would process the application immediately. Today the new SSR certificate arrived
Its really not acceptable to have to wait so long for the document, I shall be writing to my MP about this and if enough people who have been kept waiting also complain then its possible something will happen to shake up the department handling this stuff.
But would it do any good? I think DJE has the solution. If the system is so bad, find a way around it. Altering the length details by a couple of mm every 5 years will soon have them putting their house in order!
Tried phoning all day - eventually got through. They had sent me a reminder three months ago, which never arrived (lady said that they have been getting a lot of that!)
Renewal form in the post - 1st class, hope it arrives.
Asked about the website, lady also couldn’t understand why renewal couldn’t be done on the site. I think YBW should start a campaign.
