Hi,

I have been asked to build a cabinet in a friends Princess. It is an early 80s flybridge and I cannot work out what veneer has been used inside. Definately not teak (too light) not oak (I dont think)- maybe Aformosa.

Anyone got an early princess who could shed any light on this? I am still waiting for Princess to call me back with some info, so any help greatly appreciated!!!

Do you mean teak is too light to be what's in the boat, or what's in the boat is too light to be teak? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Historically they have used teak in the darker boats, and more recently cherry. In the light finish boats they have tended to use maple, though a long while ago they used ash in some boats. You'll know if it's ash due to the distinct (American oak-like) grain

You should try to match the grain as well as the colour, because the colours are influenced by stain. Princess and sunseeker cherry is much lighter than fairline cherry, frexample, due to the stains used.

Plastic...PLASTIC! How dare you. Your talking about a prestige british boat maker. Plastic indeed. For your information I had an aunt that was a French Polisher. I know she was good at it. The phone never stopped from all the postcards in the newsagents window.
I think you'll find that that was not plastic but a fine veneer cut from virgin wood from the Formica tree!

Re: Veneer of the week

praps get some of the other wood, like a shelf and cart it down to Shadbolts on the north circular nr edmonton. They do loads of veneers and every week they change the sign. Doesn't mean anything, but it's a nice touch. Sometimes i ringem up to find out this weeks veneer.

Re: Princess

A friend of mine went round the Princess factory, and from what he tells me, they make the whole boat out of plastic! Imagine that!

I will never buy a Princess, as, despite never owning one, I know they complete crap, and shoddily made out of plastic. And they don't even make their own engines, but use some imported ones.

Re: Princess

I propose lobbying this company for a name change - Princess sounds to me a bit. well..... girlie - even woofterish....... Not to imply that their owners aspiring or actual are in any way of that leaning. Perhaps a proper name would be far more fitting... 'Princeline' sounds good enough to me even if the boats are a bit......... ehhhhhh.... plastikky!! and is much more in keeping with proper boats. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

been looking at a few Princess recently and all the older boats we've seen have been Birds Eye Maple. A sort of swirly light beige effect.
