Hello everyone

I love this notion that every boat can be bought for 20% below the asking price! I am sure some can (and some even more), but as a blanket approach do you really think it is reprosentitive? Let me know when your Nova is up for sale, with a 20% dicount on your asking price it might be worth a look.

There's lots of info on the forum about petrol v's diesel, in a nutshell the arguments are along the lines of:

Advantages of Petrol:
Cheaper to buy
Can be faster
sound nicer
no big clouds of smoke

Advantages of Diesel:
Safer (another argument in its own right)
Cheaper fuel (until Nov next year)
More efficient so better range given same size fuel tanks
Better residuals/easier to resell

Yes you can get boats in all sizes with single engines! on a planing boat mid 30fter there are some but not many, and especially in the UK buyers tend to prefer twin engine, the single setup will be cheaper to maintian and probably cheaper to fuel and of course cheaper to buy in the first place!

But then you've got better manouverability with twin and if something goes wrong with 1 engine you've got another to get you home... although its often a fuel problem so will probably leave you with two engines that don't work!!

tricky buying a first boat, as even with the best of planning, you dont really know what you want. You tend to find out after a season (or sooner if you ve really messed up) that in fact you want more cockpit, or a bigger berth, or a better galley etc. take a look at the running costs too- buying is just the first step. Marinas, servicing, antifoul, electronic toys. At £125k, you are looking at about £20k a year (including interest charges or less of interest earned and depreciation) So this isnt a hobby you can enjoy unless you can turn a blind eye to some of the costs!!
Dont get too swayed by the glitz;its the practical details that really make a difference. Have a look at Nordic origin boats;they might not always have the swish millionaire image, but they do concentrate on ease of moving about the boat,solid handling at sea,handholds that seem to be just where you are reaching for, even a seat that is actually possible to sit in when underway. Might not be quite what you want, but my suggestion would be when you see what they have right, you ll notice what others sometimes seem to get wrong.
 
Thank you. This is all very helpful. How do I know if it is a Nordic boat or not? Do I have to go abroad to buy one, or do you mean just built there? What builders should I look at in this case?

I think experiences vary widely about offers below the asking price. Forumite gjgm posted recently about his unsuccessful attempts to get a discount on the asking price of boats he was interested in; as a seller, all three of the boats I have sold went at the asking price.

That was my point. I am sure some boats go for 30% below if the asking price is over inflated. I got just over 93% of the asking price on the Bavaria, so to say you will get 20% off any boat is a bit misleading to a newbie.

Surely paying the money you think the boat is worth for one you wnat is better than just buying the one you get the most money off?
 
That was 28% below the owners asking price.
I bought the boat without a survey and based on seeing all the invoices for all the work that had been done.
I agreed the price flew out to see it and as it was as described went ahead.
Flew back a month later to bring it back after the cheque had cleared.

Whilst I genuinely hope Jez's business goes well ; it is rather sick that a newbie is barraged by recommendations for an unknown (to them) boat manufacturer as the first response they receive.

Hardly balanced nor informative input ! Is this where MoBo chat is going?
 
My boat is "Nordic", but nothing like a Sealine! Nordic boats tend on the whole to be a bit "different".
Your other concern should be where am I going to keep it?
Marinas in this part of the world can have long waiting lists.

That is why I called it pimping . As I say I wish you and your business well but this forum needs to be objective to be strong ...

Why not recommend what you enjoy/aspire to yourself rather than another (valued) forumite's commercial interest ?

And did make the fact that I was commercially involved perfectly clear. In fact, until your post, I hadn't mentioned the westlines on this thread directly to Souther_Lad or otherwise!

I agree with you in the most part, which is why I haven't offered any advise to SL here because I don't beleive I can do so without bias.

If Davido sees fit to reccommed someone looks at my website or considers my product then that is his call.

JezB pipes up "Westline"

Powerskipper will try and tell you that length doesn't matter
Nautical will recommend Absolutes
jfm will advise you to become a private equity advisor, make your first £5m, then buy a Sunseeker

and so on...

We all have our foibles, I prefer Single Engine Scandanavians and the only 34ft sportscruiser that comes as standard with a Single D6 is the Westline...and I quite fancy one too!

How many times can you keep pushing the Brand name? , and your defense of Davido is as poor as T Bliar's self-defense (imho) , what reason did he have for such a 'strong' commendation? ... I still maintain 'pimping' does MoBo chat no good!! BTW- Compare with S/Butt which doesn't seem to be plagued with this ..
