We recently had the pleasure of (re)visiting Helford; and a pleasure it is, even in the gloomy, misty, rain-laden days we have been having.

I noticed the usual signs warning not to anchor up-river of the moorings have disappeared (and there were several boats which had taken advantage of the new freedom). I wondered what has happened to the oyster farm. Does anyone here know? Are we allowed to anchor here now?

Google says the oyster farm was handed back to the Duchy of Cornwall a couple of years ago. No commercial activity now, but some in Port Navas, possibly.

Google and other searches seem to be coy about anchoring beyond the moorings. There was a media article by Tom Cunliffe advising anchoring off Frenchman's Creek was possible but I haven't seen much anchoring up there. We have anchored just beyond the moorings.

The boatman/tax collector said we could not anchor there "as the oyster people would be cross". But nothing happened; no-one spoke to us.

We avoid going that far up, preferring to anchor lower down. We also find the visitor moorings to be very poor value, costing about the same as Fowey but with no facilities, except peace and quiet. Min charge 35' boat I seem to recall.

Was there last weekend and several boats were anchored further up, with the increased available space it has probably peed off the mooring tax collector as when I first anchored in my usual favoured spot not far from the sailing club he came over and insisted we were not allowed to do it, that was a first after anchoring there on and off for many years

Did you move, did you pay or did you tell him to be on his way? I’m hoping you stood your ground and he left muttering under his breath.

I don’t want to antagonise the locals and with more choosing to anchor rather than pay he’s probably feeling the pinch so we went and anchored with the others
He was definitely left muttering
