Capsize is almost certainly allways caused by one part of the boat traveling faster that the other.
There are a number of factors that cause this.
If you are running before the wind and waves and your boat comes up to wave spead you will begin to surf occaisonally this will cause your bow to dig in to the trough ahead causing it to slow down the stern is still travelling at wave spead and has nowhere to go so you will either pitch pole or broach. Broaching is the main cause of serious damage to yachts as it happens more often. This principal allso applies to lying ahull.
This explanation is a simplification of the issue.
