I have a Galion 22ft with the original head fitted, this head has a large rubber domed [plunger] cover, which is no longer functional ,can anyone say if these can be bought in the uk. also just forward of the fwr bulkhead in the bottom centre of the hull is a white plastic pipe about 3ins high with a cover containing oil, is this a position for a depth transducer ,because i could sure use it , if so what type goes there. Thanks for your wonderful help!!

Not sure about the loo, but that is an echo sounder transducer fitting. Can you describe it a little more - any brand name on the cap, how does the cap fit? Short of a description, any transducer that will physically fit will be fine. Oil is usually castor oil I think? And is used to acoustically connect hull to sounder.

Your toilet is a very old "Ball Head," which has been out of production for at least a couple of decades. No replacement parts have been available for years. So if it no longer works, the only solution is a new toilet.

And they were amazingly simple, too. I suspect that the advent of laws requiring holding tanks is what led to its demise...'cuz they only work in toilets that flush directly overboard. Pulling waste back out of a tank to flush wouldn't appeal to many people. :)

Wonderful toilets and simple to use... until the time a friend forgot to open the flap as she pumped the dome!

The end came when the bottom seal wore out and it began leaking into the bowl. At the time I had some spares, including a new dome.... but as is usual, not the part I wanted. I tried glueing a new piece of rubber onto the flap (specially made by a friend that worked for I.C.I.) but it wore out within a few months, so it had to go.

Now the hole has been sealed completely, and a new toilet sits in its place....... along with piping and seacocks.

What's wrong with your "Ball Hed" . I installed mine in 1978 and it's still OK.

Everything has a lifespan, Vic. And like people, some things live longer than others. Your Ball Head just apparently is descended from a stronger gene pool than most others:)

Thanking everyone for their replies I will try to see if there is any writing on the cap of the plastic pipe fitted in the hull, but the cap is just a push over tight fitting. The toilet rubber dome has work hardened in this hot climate. Thanks and wishing you all a warm spring!!!

The general concensus on the Balhed is to BIN IT! As has been said, no spares are available; NO seacocks are fitted, so you could have a large hole directly into the sea with no means of sealing it; the whole unit has been known to break at the flange if you sat down heavily when the boat lurched - leaving a very large hole pouring in gallons of water!
I agree it is very simple but a NoNo nowadays

I don't know about the particular head used on your boat but a number of different ones were used and the boat design seems able to accept the SL type bowls and pumps. Yes the depth finder on my Galion is in the position you describe.

I'm trying to start a Galion 22 Owners Association where we can build a database full of usefull information on these comfortable and fast cruiser racers.
