Had 3 quotes for our Beneteau 323 .. HavenKJ @ £305 and Saga @ £390 both seem to have the same cover or am I missing something . Never had a claim  yet .. Racing cover for a Beneteau event offered by HavenKJ .. Anyone got an opinion .

Navigators and General .. In the middle @ £350

You could try St.Margarets and Bishop Skinner, though they both seem in the 'good service' rather than bottom price category.

Bishop Skinner always used to do a discount to RYA members, worth a try as is mentioning any qualifications.

Judging by my parents motorcaravan, Saga aren't competetive at all...

There are cheaper firms, but as I use St.Margarets I forget the cheap firms' name.

I might be finding it again come renewal time !

HavenKJ and St.Margrets

HavenKJ incorporates St.Margrets according to their letter head so they appear to be one and the same .. :) .. Will check out RYA qualification discounts .. Thanks for that ..

Why ??

Is it worth finding the paperwork and reading all the small print or would you happen to know which of the two offers the better cover . Having read a number of your posts it does seem that you know your way round a boat yard .. :D

It might come down to the treatment of claims. Saga, as I understand it, are not a specialist boat insurer. A neighour of ours had enormous problems claiming for a near-sinking, and nearly ended up in court. It took two years to settle the claim.

Why Pantaeneous?

When I insured my Oceanis 311 for the first time a couple of years ago I went with Pantaneous (? spelling?), because after reading the small print of other insurers (can't remember which) I noticed that they specified that there be TWO competent crew (including the skipper) on board, whereas Pantaneous specifically allowed singlehanded sailing.

I don't intend to sail singlehanded, but I want to be able to take out a non sailing friend for a few hours and not then have an insurance claim disallowed because he doesn't qualify as a competent crew in the insurance company's view.

Haven't had to make a claim but have found them helpful with issues such as leaving seakcocks open and mains power switched on so I can run a dehumidifier when we are away from the boat.

Nothing wrong with my HKJ policy's small print.. can sail single handed, at night, etc.... only real restriction is the usual geographic one... Brest to Elbe

On the one occasion I had to contact them (to get approval for someone else to skipper the boat without my presence) they were efficient, helpful and obliging.

Another vote for Pantaenius

Hi,

I also have a Beneteau 323 and have her insured with Pantaenius. The cost is less than £400 a year (I haven't got the policy with me so I can tell you exactly) and that is for a Day Skipper with this as my first yacht. I have had to call them twice with problems, once for damage which they sorted out very smartly (surveyors etc) and then the next this potential damage which again they assisted with.

The people on the phone are excellent, very good at answering your questions quickly and they cover a very wide area and are happy for me to sail single handed.

I am in no rush to change and will stay with them at this rate.

PM me if you want some more info on either insurance or the B323.

Well done on having such a great boat.

HKJ - OK

I've been insured by HKJ for years through Desmond Cheers. Last year I had 3 break ins with all electronics being nicked each time. HKJ dealt with all claims efficiently with no quibbles and full cover throughout.

Mind you they were a bit quizzical about this year's cover, but as I'd moved the boat away from the burglar scum they were happy to continue with ordinary rates.

So, a big tick for HKJ from me.

Likewise insured with them for 12years had no claims but they covered me racing to Azores for a one off additional £100 with no increase in excess and have allways changed or increased my cruising area at no cost including 3 months on a swinging mooring in Ireland one year. So no quibbles but have never made a marine insurance claim and don't want to:eek:

Nearly all insurers are trying to increase premiums but at the same time increase business, so these days it is almost certain that they will quote a lower price to a new customer than a renewing one, some will haggle and come down if you ring them, unheard of only a few years ago, but others such as Saga do not seem to have the knowledge to do this effectively. You will get no thanks for blind loyalty so shop around.
If you never had many claims it is hard to measure service, the only claim I ever made was with St Margarets, well and fairly handled but many years ago. I had a claim against me some years later and again I was impressed with their negotiators knowledge of colregs. racing rules etc. and was pleased that they were strong enough to tell the other partys insurers to go take a jump.
I am back with St Margararets now, before that Navigators but have used quite a few of the others.

One downside of swapping insurers is some may req a survey so any saving are lost

If you are a member of the beneteau owners association you get 12.5% discount off with HKJ, I saved £60 odd by changing to them. £279 if I remember right for a Bene 381
