A few days ago a bought a classic gaff yawl. As many most proud owners I also like to find out some more about her history. What do I know sofar (with help from OGA):
The boat used to belong to a member of the OGA. She is registered with as 'CONABOR'.
She was built as a yacht and was designed by H C Smith, and built by Usborne at Thurgarton, near Aldborough in 1908. She was registered as a Cutter, so it looks as though her mainsail was reduced during a re-rig for ease of handling.
The yawl is 32' (LOD) and 43' (LOA) and it's beam is almost 9'. It has a raised deck at the front. The raised deck looks quite old but Í'm not sure if it's original. The toilet, ankorchain storageroom, kitchen and cupboard are in the front of the boat. Beds in the middel and rear. Can anybody tell me some more in the way of what her original rig could have looked like or even have some pictures/ drawings. Every detail will help. I want to enclose a picture but have no clue how to do this Any thoughts?
I'm looking forward to any replies.

Thanks in advance.

Greetings,

Roland

She might have a lifting keel,a lot of these boats about this age did! and looking at the small river she`s motoring in i woulnt be supprised if she did.It was a fair question sir.

Hi there,
she has a long keel. The pictures are taken by the former owner. Taken somewhere late 70's / early 80's. I'll send you some pics from a few days ago in a minute. They're not that great but good enough for an impression.

Love the 'galleon'-type interior, hope you enjoy the hours of work ahead of you.

Blimey, that engine looks a bit of a project! Is it running OK? The rest of the boat looks great from the photos. Are you getting divorced? The amount of time I spend on Cleone, my wife's considering telling me to pack a bag and leave, only I'm never home - too busy varnishing! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Old wooden boats - great for the sanity but bad for relationships.

Hi is the engine a Kelvin?is it a runner?,talking about wooden boat projects and divorces, whilst visiting a marina in wales last week, we got talking to the manager about a sad but pretty looking canoe stern carvel built boat tucked into a corner, she is about 32ft loa. we recon about 80years old and was once a sailing boat but at some time converted to a motor boat, the owner walked away about a year ago and the marina wants rid of,a quick poke around below at the wood which seemed sound, when the marina said they would let her go for a couple of hundred, the look on my partners face spoke volumes,"a few years work weekends and evenings a couple of grand and we`ll....."come back, come back cant we talk about it, oh well another one bites the dust(boat not wife)worse luck.watch this space tho.

Re: and here are the pictures...

it sure needs some TLC. but as I paid next to nothing for it I'm happily to spend some money on it. And by the way....I'm single at the moment no worries at that point. :) And when such a boat is finished....the girls will follow soon, won't they?!..haha.
I have no idea (yet) what kind of engine it is. So far I know it's a 2-stroke 2 cil. diesel engine from 1956. It's not a runner at the moment. It used to run ok. But I know some mechanics so we should get that engine back to life without to much problems. Any tips?
I'll keep you posted...

Hi Roland
A lovely boat!

Have you read any of Maurice Griffiths sailing books? Try "The Magic of the Swatchways" and "Swatchways and little ships", they give wonderful descriptions of sailing these types of boats and may help to keep you going during your working weekends!

As a girl who's just about at the end of a big rebuild, I know that having a boat like mine seems to pull the birds for any men on board! (1896 Plymouth Hooker! Was in the forum in february) However it does get rather irritating when all questions are asked of my novice male crew and rather surprised faces greet me when they point to me as skipper! Any advice, boys?!

The best advice is to wear a skimpy top with "I'm the Captain" printed on it at nipple level - stops all that sort of thing cold.
