Threads on this forum seem to come to a halt when two (or more) of us go off the point and into personal attacks.
Perhaps we could have a new year's resolution (belated) to refrain from personal attacks and stick to the point.
You may well think I am stupid, wrong-headed, ugly, unkind to small furry animals, over fond of sheep etc, etc but telling me so is unlikely to raise the tone of debate.
Just a thought.

Agree with you entirely, everyone has a point of view and may wish to
express it whether its right or wrong does not matter.
When I first posted on the forums was nervous about the response that I
would receive from my comments and should imagine that a lot of people
hiding in the wings feel the same way,
Some must find it very off putting to read some of the replies that are posted,
Made a resolution myself not to answer in a sarcastic or superior way.

I agree, although I had a bit of a spat with Buck few weeks ago which brought the thread to an abrupt end which I felt couldn't be avoided because I had to defend myself - so I don't know what you do about that.

Plus the fact that it is opinions which make the forum interesting ("How do I's" can be a bit boring) and by definition therefore, someone will disagree. We must not descend into bloody PC speak. (There's an opinion)

Re: Quite agree

It is one of the golden rules of life if not only of the forum, serves no purpose at all and is highly destructive. Maybe permissible in court but not here, need to think of a suitable punishment!

If I see peeps doing this I will often launch full Iraq style counter - attack just for the hell of it. (Magic Sailor was my last one, remember the Manchester accent thread!)

This is going to sound dreadfully boring but...

...there's a lot of truth in what you say from my perspective.

When I speak with people who don't get involved in these forums, but are aware of them, I am variously treated somewhere on a scale running from dubious respect for putting up with administering them to derision, the latter probably carrying the majority.

Don't care about that as such, but when you drill deeper in the conversation it mostly cenres around concerns about being personally attacked by other users.

There is a lot of value in what happens here but it gets more valuable again as others are encouraged to contribute and so if avoidance of overt personal aggression was a collective 2003 new year's wish I for one would welcome it. Mind you, perhaps that's too late as a plea? - it's already Jan 16 so I guess everyone is already working out how to cancel the 12-month gym contract and back on the booze and the chocolate biscuits?

On the other hand I would thank the vast majority (and by that I mean just about everybody) for keeping things on a reasonably level footing. I am aware of bulletin boards covering other (usually quite innocent) interests that are so out of hand they are either unusable or have been closed down.

Just had a thought...

..how about you all agree that I have the right to penalise excessive abuse with lines. The miscreant's next post would solely have to contain x number of sentences of one of the shipping acts (to avoid cutting and pasting an obscure 19th Century version never released electronically to be chosen).

Just joking (I think)

Yes I do!

And whilst definitely not making a personal attack on you ......you were wrong! You must have been wrong because only last night SWMBO said that I was God....or was it that I thought I was God. I dunno.

What I can tell you though was that it wasn't an attack on people with any particular accent (I do love 'em) but merely the PC use of them - that's all.

Yours humourously

Well spotted.

How's the foot? And what do you keep kicking to break it so often?

You didn't miss much at E Court, although the Hunter Mystery was quite good fun, if not the real McCoy. Your rapier-lke wit was missed after-hours though, besieged as we raggies were in a sea of smokies (suprisingly they all had the normal number of heads).

OK to be honest

She said that I thought I was God. We were watching a tele programme - No Going Back" and I just happened to comment a couple of times, in what might have been a depracatory manner, that these people "needed their heads testing" and "really, what di they expect"..."if they had half a brain cell between 'em".

That sort of thing - nothing really - perfectly reasonable.

She said "You think you're God...every one's got to think like you....you think nobody else can put 2 and 2 together"

Can't think why!

Re: This is going to sound dreadfully boring but...

As a recently 'come-out' lurker on the YBW forums and having taken no part in any discussions on the forum over the last year, I believe that you do an excellent job with great objectivity. It is very difficult to be objective when you are actively involved; both in your personal leisure activities and in your professional capacity.

I would suggest that perhaps the quality of moderator helps to determine the level of abusage a site suffers!

It may also be that the wide variety & character of the users themselves has a bearing on the low level of abusage. MBC users seems more gregarious (perhaps because they meet in the flesh occasionally they have a better understanding of their fellow users characters/personalities). IMO, Scuttlebutt tends to attract less flippancy than MBC, & PBO less than Scuttlebutt. Scuttlebutters seem to have a greater breadth/depth of knowledge over a wider canvas (maybe it's just a greater willingness to share?). Perhaps these traits is also a result of the level of user intimacy on each forum.
