My (un)favourite things

No, I guess that's the point really...there aren't many but those that happen do get noticed out of proportion to total posts. If anything gets extreme I sin-bin it anyway - doesn't happen often - less so now than 12 months back and yet we have a much larger audience now. One day I'm going to open pay-per-view on the sin bin to raise cash for a charity.../forums/images/icons/smile.gif

A few of the things I find hard to swallow, on the rare occasions they arise across all of the forums (not necessarily here), are:

a) attacks regarding spelling and grammar - there are several reasons why written posts might not be up to scratch and ignorance is rarely one of them. That's not to say I wouldn't want to encourage nicely constructed posts here with relevant subject lines and avoid the use of capital letters at all costs but hopefully everyone will know what I mean;

b) "your father smelt of elderberries" type verbal artillery exchanges (but posted with less humour). As soon as people start trading accusations of 'cretin' and 'sad person' I start thinking of sawdust floors and spittoons - the kind of pub that's usually best avoided;

c) excessive use of nasty language (or for that matter a whole string of offensive words that the poster thinks acceptable due to the insertion of asterisks);

d) I'm not PC by nature but there's sometimes a fine line between good humour and poor taste, especially when viewed in written form;

e) flaming newcomers, largely because they haven't got the measure of the forum or because they appear to be trolling (I would rather I was left to worry about the latter problem as and when it happens).

I have to bite my lip anyway because as someone has kindly pointed out, I believe it is important for me and the others that moderate here to keep an objective mind and avoid inflicting personal views or values on everyone else as much as possible. Sometimes I cannot resist, for which apologies. Most of the time it isn't an issue, for which thanks.

Anyhow, that's enough of that!

Re: Stop, Artemis...

Weren't you promoting "peace, love & understanding" in an earlier thread?

I take it you've now put the "ciggy" out?

Happy hour

Could'nt we have an angry hour once a week where we can say anything about anything to anybody and then at the end of the hour everything gets deleted and all that suppressed aggro will have been released?

What what.

Re: My (un)favourite things

I say old chap, sorry to appear obtuse, but what is wrong with using capital letters ? In addition, can someone please explain what exactly is meant by trolling ? I only know the latter as used to depict travelling in a boat at slow speed.

PS (Whoops) I think all three forums are well policed, thanks.

Re: My (un)favourite things

ALL CAPITALS = shouting

Trolling = post designed to attract predictable responses or cause a fight, usually from a fake ID ie someone experienced on the forums dressing themselves up as a newcomer. Incidentally we don't like dual IDs either; life is too short.

Hope that clarifies and thanks for the comments.

Re: My (un)favourite things

Hi all .
Thanks for mentioning attacks regarding spelling and bad grammar. On numurous
occations, I have had to bring it to peoples attention that standards are dropping.
Only trouble is I love the banter and harsh words ,Find the forum a little boring when everyone is nice.
Also Iv`e lot and lots of money and don`t have to work any more ,not like some out there who work 9-5 in some office.giving me a hard time . they must be bored to death being nice So come on ,start the slanging match .

Heads down I think they are coming . cheers bob t

I\'d rather not of you don\'t mind old chap

I hope your subject line is not an invitation to treat...

But I guess there might still have to be some pom versus aus sport retained here...the ybw.com forums might remain the only place where the Brits can thrash the downunders (with apologies to those who have high hopes for the rugby) /forums/images/icons/smile.gif
