I watch TV at home and haven't had a licence for many years as I don't need one.

I get regular (monthly) harassment from Capita but as yet no goon has knocked on my door.

The funny thing is that out of the dozens of letters I've had from them, several stated they are in the final stages of their investigation which can't be going well as they still think my name is The Legal Occupier.

Secondly, they've had 3 or more goes at a "final investigation" according to their letters yet never brought anything to a conclusion (ie excrete or get off the pot).

Yes, I will be in on the 8th of January or any other date :ROFLMAO:

Im on 'threat letter' 47 from TVL. ( get one every month)
Its laughable tbh, also had a couple of visits but they just put a note through the letter box. never even rung the doorbell (was in at the time)
My favorite letters are the ones that come in solid RED envelopes 🤣🤣🤣
Desperation on the part of the BBC carried out by Capita

At the risk of thread drifting, I always wonder about any letter addressed to 'The Legal Occupier'. When the sender inserts that word 'Legal', do they think that 'The Occupier' and 'The Legal Occupier' are different people'? If the person is in illegal occupation, can they safely ignore the letter?

I didn't know that so-called TV detector vans still exist.

Can they detect anything? Could they ever?

In the days of CRT televisions, they could be detected. But LCD forget it.
Using things like iplayer will show if you have viewed BBC content.
TVL know who is residing at the property (easy to find out) I suspect they use 'The Occupier' on the letters to avoid anyone bringing a harassment case against them.
Im not against the BBC, but they need to get into the 21st century and secure a more suitable funding model.

What about Johnny Foreigner coming over with his TV/DVD/Bluray player in his car, do they need a TV licence for that time in the UK?

TV in the car does not work in Belgium as there is no over the air broadcast, all went cable quite a few years ago.

If you use the iPlayer it asks you if you have a TV license. Seems like a pretty foolproof system to me even in the 21st century.

But there is no paywall. Friends in Spain use a VPN and disposable email address to log in.

If you were minded to lie, how could you be caught/prosecuted? Are Capita able to get ISPs to disclose service/ billing addresses for IP numbers logging in?

Not foolproof at all. Unless your post was tongue in cheek.

You may not need a licence for your boat though if…

  1. You have a bricks and mortar home and you have a television license for that home and there is no one watching television simultaneously at both addresses. So, if your house is empty when you are cruising, you’re OK. However, if you rent your house out, or you have other family members living at the address, you will need an additional license for your boat.
