I need a new part for my elderly Perkins 4236, a short pipe, approx 5 inches long, about 1 3/4" bore. They want £225 plus VAT!!!!!

no, its the boat connection that doubles the price , or sometimes trebles it !! .

What has been forgotten here is that Perkins (bless their Cotton socks) have been storing your desired spare part for many, many years, just so that you can have it when you want it. The huge cost is nothing to with the part costs, its warehousing costs

There are a number of pipe fabrication companies that will duplicate any pipe for lot less and give you a warranty, you could also get advice from them on what material you should use to make last even longer.

If it's the rubber pipe in the pc you want, you should be able to get a silicone hose for perhaps a tenner.
Many people selling them on ebay.
If it's a rigid metal hose you want, try a motorsport company like Merlin at castle combe.
