Out on the river tonight, spotted a forumite's boat, all covers zipped up, no sign of life but the ensign flying, about 8pm, what explanation could there be?

8pm is before "lighting up time", surely.
Only photographic evidence of a duster flapping in darkness will be considered by the umpires.

Have a care, perhaps he will be back just before sunset to lower the duster to the accompaniment of bugles, doffing of caps and hearty hurrahs.

On the other hand, the ensign may be printed and not sewn and therefore has the provenance of a tea towel owned by a chav, or Sailorman.

Look to the stitching, its all in the stitches.

Printed? Heaven forbid.

I think the perpetrator knows who she is.

excellent observation, a printed ensign....oh dear ;)

OK, I'm completely lost on this one...

Do you mean you have to lower the flag before you leave the boat, or evenmoreso every evening  ???
Is that (apologies) a Brit thing, or something everyone should do no mater what flag their boat has?

TBH, I've not seen anyone do something similar down here.
(actually all the boats on the hard at the boatyard I'm based in the last couple of years have the greek flag up)

cheers

V.
