Does anybody know if the beach at the Harwich public slipway will support a conventional car without bogging down. I do not have a four wheel drive and the boat/trailer is under 500kilos.

Definitely. I have pulled a Drascombe Lugger out of there with a front-wheel-drive saloon car. It looks steep but isn't a problem.

Seek local advice to avoid race days, when the local club seems able to monopolise the place. But if you are carefully manoeuvring a heavy boat on to a trailer, the presence in the near offing of about 50 Wayfarers or whatever will gaurantee you lots of hands-on help to get you boat on and away.

Regards, Mudhook.

I don't know if this is possible at Harwich, but in the middle east we used to put trailer boats in the water off sandy beaches and then letting out all but say 5psi pressure from your drive tyres, you could then get the car and trailer on to a hard stand area. To get the boat out we always used a rope tow and an oversized wheel on the trailer dolly, with this method you can almost put your boat in anywhere & don't need a slip. Obviously you do need a couple of helping hands, but left over fossies usually insure some help.

Tip: if you are a diver or can get hold of a divers air bottle with a first stage reg, you can get an adaptor that will go from the first stage straight on to your tyre valve to inflate yr tyres, really easy peesy then.
