On eBay you can find brand new hand held tranceivers for around £40. Typically they operate on frequencies from around 137MHz to 170 ish MHz. You can program the keys with the marine frequencies making them as friendly as a proper marine set.
What a pity they are probably illegal, as one of those would make an excellent backup unit.
Quite honestly I'm not sure about the licensing of these radios. Since it's possible to cause serious annoyance/interference by roaming onto forbidden frequencies, I'm fairly sure they wouldn't be covered by a marine licence. However it's clearly not illegal to buy them in the UK otherwise they'd be banned from the auction site.
It's not my intention to lead anyone astray nor to cause general annoyance BTW.
