any recommendations for hand held gps to back up my on board gps plotter. to be used only in emergency/battery failure etc

If it;s just for emergency/basic use then simply get yourself a Garmin Etrex , very basic and very reliable piece of kit. Long lasting batteries too. Don't worry about pro's and con's for such a piece of equipment. You can pick one up cheap on Ebay.

Three generations of Garmin hand helds (45, 12XL and GEOMAP 60) are still working. The GPSMAP 60CSx takes the same mapping products as the fixed chart plotters, and Garmin permit two licenses, hence poltter and handheld will use same charts.

I thought I was covered having two handhelds as back up, one in the grab bag. In the event when they were needed they both packed up within 2 hours of each other. Just a word of caution for anyone thinking they don't need a chart and pencil, it doesn't take much moisture to stop them working once it gets inside the casing.
