Has anyone experience of using hammerite on metal fittings below the waterline - i'm thinking of using it to protect rudder pintle fittings but don't want to cause any problems. Failing the use of this has anyone any suggestions as to a product to protect mild steel fittings?
Thanks

I've used Hammerite on my keel and it worked surprisingly well, but I wouldn't use it on rudder pintles which are critical working components as against dead weight. Any paint will wear quite quickly from the friction as the rudder moves too and fro.

Have you thought about getting them galvanised? I've just had about 35lbs of steelwork galvanised by a local architectural steel fabricator (the kind of guy who makes gates etc). He added it to a load of work that he was getting galvanised. It only cost £15, and it ended up with a good coat of hot dip galvanising.

I used it on an outdrive with red hammerite metal primer, the hammerite over coats came off in sheets after 9 months immersion, but the primer stayed put. Personnaly I would not use it like this again, after all its not made for this purpose is it I learnt my lesson.

excellent for growing Barnies on. Red oxide primer is a good key for steel and seems to stand up to sea water. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
