I need to put another halyard exit in the mast of my Southerly 105. It's a Kemp mast of indeterminate age. I can remeber that there are recommendations (?) as to how far apart from the other exits etc. to site the new fitting but the details of these are lost to my memory in a fog of age and alcohol (my only excuse). I would therefore greatly appreciate tapping the font of knowledge from fellow forumites before I go and cock it up!

All thoughts and ideas would be appreciated.

If it's for a spinnaker halyard, normally just above head height, no clash with others then anyway?

<hr width=100% size=1>my opinion is complete rubbish, probably.

On my trailer sailer 6.5m I started with turning blocks in boxes near the base of the mast. These gave troubler and were quite complex to cut out and fit. Now I prefer to lead the halyard out of the mast at a small angle down to a turning block on the deck 20 cms or so from the mast. The direction change therough the hole gives very little friction probably less than a turning block as thery tend to be as small as possible. I drilled a hole a bit bigger than the halyard in the mast at the site away from other halyard exits and 1 to 2 metres above the deck. Put a piece of steel rod about the same as the drill and lever downward to the mast material above the hole outward and the material below inward as much as possible. You may use a round file to small edges and improve the path of the halyard. You can buy a stainless steel plate which does the same job but requires a bigger hole. The loss of strength is no so much of a concern near the base of the mast although perhaps more concern on a keel stepped mast but down low the loads are compression. The max side load concerns are half way between stay wires. You perhaps should take more advice than mine on this subject but thats what I did for all halyards on new mast. Regards will
