My boat which is a 32' keelboat has been offered a place in a race series for half tonners. What constitutes a half tonner rating? The boat weighs in excess of four Tonnes.

Half tonners were boats of about your size that all had the same rating under the old IOR rating rule. I can't remember the exact figure. There were lots of production boats built during the seventies and eighties that were half tonners. Every year there was a World Champinships which was for the Half Ton Cup.
The whole Ton Cup thing started originally with the one ton cup which pre-dated IOR by years and was for boats with keels weighing one ton. Under IOR there were championships for Mini ton (rating 16 feet) Quarter ton (rating 18 feet) Half Ton (Cant Remember) Three Quarter, One Ton and Two ton.
Some of these ton cups have been resurrected of late with old boats that rated to these level bands racing under IRC for the original trophies. Looks like you have bene invited to join in.
Good luck.
