Had to leave boat in Ice this winter ....

Our Twins ... Bonnie and Clyde at 6 months old get to be in real snow first time .... (need to use line as they still need to learn borders .. we have no fences on 3 sides) ...

Clyde looking up at me .... please let me free !!

Boat and pontoon as you see are well and truly frozen in now ... ice is about 10cms thick and will get to probably near 1m thick later ...
River is now frozen but ice is still thin out there ... will take a while before fishermen venture out.

That looks cold Nigel. I won't boor you with stories of heat wave in our state northern parts. Like towns with max over 40 for weeks on end often to 45. That would melt your ice quick smart. Not so here in the south just nice mostly, or a bit cold to get in the water to scrub the little boat. Stay warm Nigel and yes your summer will come. ol'will

Airfix is owned by Hornby and still has a fairly good range.
I left it too late to get down to the boat to drain the cockpit shower line - new cartridge for the mixer tap again! Frozen solid when I got down to Ipswich today.
Hope all goes well with back recovery and roll on Summer?

Cheers Will ...

Wasn't Hornby bought up by some outside company ??

Just a few years back ... maybe 5 ... I had a large collection of 00 rolling stock ... loco's ... wagons .. carriages .... some absolute collectors items .... while having building work done - some ******* decided to up and away with the stock. I'd spent years since childhood putting that lot together ... I had plans to create a large setup in one room.
Trouble was by time I found out it was gone - was too late ...
I had an idea who - but no evidence to get Police or anyone to check.

Sorry to hear your news, hope you recover and can play with the boat next season.

The closest I got to ice was in Shetland where fresh water over salt in the sheltered voes could freeze in a thin layer, then scour the waterlines of any moored boats when it broke up in the wind. It could open the seams of wooden boats. The old fishing boat I owned for a while (launched 1914) had a plastic strip screwed on from bow to widest beam to protect the waterline.

There was concern one winter in Stromness harbour, Orkney, with similar ice forming, fortunately it did not damage the boats in the marina.

My race boat in Tallinn ... pine on elm - in winter - the seams would open up really wide in places. When I bought her - I considered having her sheathed - but not so used to a wooden boat is such extreme winters - listened to locals ...

Come Spring we used to suspend her in the crane for a couple of hours with a pump running inside.

As some know - I suffered fractured spine and still subject to Physio Therapy and Rehab. I could have asked friends to 'help' drop mast and lift boat - but she's wintered in ice before and no ill effects.

Winter is slowly taking its hold with us ... today we skipped around the -2 ... to -5C mark .... with last night dipping to a recorded -11C ..... (I have trailcams arund the grounds to capture 'wildlife' that ventures in - they record time and temp).
Ice is thin at present but it will build .... my channel can get to nearly 1m thick as it is near stationary water. The river with its flow can get to 30 - 40cms thick .... if severe enough for long enough - it has reached 1m thick out there making it hard for those who like 'Ice Fishing'.

Its not unusual to see 20 or 30 people out there - some even camping over night on the ice .... few years back - it was estimated well over 100 people on the stretch just where I am !

That's it then to maybe April ... if lucky maybe ice will start to go late March but unlikely.

I'm sorry I haven't been following your threads. (Hope you get over your spinal fracture quickly)

I nearly joined you in the world of the walking wounded the other day as I was installing a bench vice on a new work bench when it dropped to the floor. Luckily all I have to show for it is some black skin on the end of my big toe.

Just a quick one: where were those photos taken of your yacht on the ice? What country?

NOTE
Just read the previous post. Maybe Tallinn Estonia??

Hi ...

You are lucky ... breaking my big toe delayed my Spinal Physio ..... I am now paying a big price for that ...

My 3 boats are at my home in Ventspils, Latvia ... I have my own channel and moorings at bottom of garden.

My race boat - I sold some years ago was based in Pirita - near Tallinn in Estonia.
