Local Notice to Mariners

LNTM 06/04 10/02/2004 - PORTSMOUTH HARBOUR ENTRANCE - APPROACH CHANNEL, SMALL BOAT CHANNEL, SWASHWAY AND INNER SWASHWAY

<Snip>

8. Gunwharf Quays/Town Camber - Traffic Management. The following traffic management plan for craft under 20 metres in length (bound to/from Town Camber/Gunwharf Quays) is now in force:

a. Arrival. In the interest of safety all craft under 20m in length bound for Gunwharf Quays/Town Camber are to enter harbour through the Small Boat Channel. Vessels are only to cross the Main Channel when they are to the north of Ballast Buoy, and approval has been obtained from QHM on VHF Channel 11. Vessels fitted with engines are to use them from entering the Small Boat Channel until arrival at Gunwharf Quays/Town Camber.

b. Departure. All craft under 20m in length departing from Gunwharf Quays and Town Camber are to obtain approval from QHM on VHF Channel 11 before proceeding. All vessels leaving the Town Camber are to ask approval before slipping and again when in the vicinity of The Point prior to crossing the main channel. All vessels are then to cross the Main Channel direct to Ballast Buoy and leave harbour through the Small Boat Channel. Vessels fitted with engines are to use them until exiting the Small Boat channel. If any of these vessels are not fitted with VHF radio, fixed or portable, then they are to be escorted by a marshalling craft or accompany another vessel so fitted. When on station a QHM Harbour Patrol Launch or Volunteer Harbour Patrol Launch may undertake this task.

Re: Local Notice to Mariners

Thanks everybody for the excellent advice posted here. The key to safety in the southern part of Portsmouth Harbour is following the rules posted here by l'escargot and available in full with a diagram on my website. An ever increasing number of yachts are getting to grips with the business of calling me on CH11 (callsign is QHM not Portsmouth Harbour Radio which is the commercial ferry port) before crossing the harbour between Ballast and Gunwharf or the Town Camber. The Harbour Patrol encourages those who do not follow or do not know the rules to learn or obey them. From 14 May the Harbour Patrol will be augmented by the Volunteer Harbour Patrol so the service should get even better. But I am encouraged by the way the message is getting across as shown by the reduced number of incidents despite the ever increasing traffic (about 3% per year). Well done and thanks to all my locals getting the word out. All the Best

Re: Local Notice to Mariners

Pleased to report that after my visit to Gunwharf Quay today, then QHM were very obliging and according to my radio, most boats were calling up to ask for permission to cross to Gunwharf Quay from Ballast Buoy and vice versa.

The QHM web site is useful and also has a nice picture of the previous poster. It is good to know that we are being listened to.
