The North Channel (turn right at Hurst) is often safer than the Needles Channel. If you are using the Needles Channel, be wary of the tide sweeping on to the Shingles bank.

With wind against tide there can be severe overfalls in the Little Russel.

In a southwesterly wind it's common to find fog near Alderney and Guernsey. The safest bet then is Cherbourg, but if you've timed your passage to get a favourable tide in the race, then it may be difficult to avoid getting sucked in. If so, then it's probably safer to go through the Big Russel between Herm and Sark, then approach SPP from the south.

I disagree with some of the advice you have received so far which seemed like over planning to me.

You only have a 26 hour margin of error and the unexpected might chip away at this.

My advice is that if wind, visibility, tide and yacht permit set off Thursday evening and keep going until you get there or something else intervenes and dictates it is safer to stop.

Other suggestions might leave you risking a dash down the Race Saturday morning in murky conditions.

Re: Bridge - what bridge?

The Bridge over Troubled Waters by the sound of things.

You guys sure know how to put someone off sailing to C.I.
Seems like very careful planning is required Ian and lots of strawberries for SPAH.
