GRP restoration-My own method :). What\'s yours?

This could be boring if obsessive compulsive cleaning of your boat bores you LOL. I get this bug about once a year or so.

Since I'm not a professional at this I've had to trial and error find my own way to restor DreamFinder's 30 year old GRP skin to her former glory.

When I first had her I had G3'd her all over and used a teflon polish.

That was a weeks work last year and it got rid of the matt finish that had worn into her.

However, a few weeks ago I went over again with an international yacht rubbing compound and polish. The original smoothness hadn't gone particularly, just that she wasn't as shiny as all that :).

However, after volunteering to do a friend's boat in the marina (I needed something to do whilst trying to learn spanish) I found out something interesting. I didn't know that G3, G6 and G10 were meant to be used with water.

LOLOL The Farecla bottles have little pics on them, but don't we all look for instructions in words? :).

So now, I get to go over her again-far more slowly. I can get a near mirror finish with simply G6 (squeezy tube) by hand with a wet cloth-taking my time on each section.

Followed by LOTs of time on the G10 with another wet cloth.
After inspecting it real close (this gets rather sad-I spend ages looking at this), I finish off with a teflon wax and teflon sealer. Couple of coats of each :).

So far I've done 3 different sections of her-They feel very much smoother and finer than the original finish. Dull ripples are eliminated and look like new now.

So, does anyone else get a bit of a polishing bug when they aren't travelling etc?

What do you like to use?

Got any other tips?

I've been told to try Tuff-seal, the 5 year one, as apparently its fine on top of what I have used and lasts longer. Thats my next experiment.

Will it work on paint? Some former owner painted Jedi's hull and its dull in many places. Better yet will it, with work, gently remove painted on lettering?

It is made for the automotive industry so it's made to work with paint, give it a try it's superb. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

It works well on paint. There is a lot of painted areas on DreamFinders superstructure, however with a lot of effort I've made some of them shine like the GRP did :).

The G10 works great on the car for sure. G6 would be a bit harsh I would think. It cuts quite quickly.

The biggest mistake I made with G3, and G6 was not realising to put water in the cloth etc. Knowing that has made a big difference LOL.

Paint coatings aremuch thinner than Gel-coat and Farecla is an abrasive so frequent aplication over paint is not to be reccommended,

I'd be very careful polishing paint. Properly applied Awlgrip (for instance) is only 100 microns thick - so abrasives will soon eat through that. Any decent paint system should keep its gloss much better than GRP (particularly coloured GRP), so best to give it a good wash and then use one of the polymer-style coatings once a year. eg. Rejex or Awlcare - which is what Awlgrip recommend.

I'd have thought that waxing a painted surface was fine too - but again, paint manufacturers seem to be against that. I can't work out whether thats because they can rip you off more selling you their products, or whether there is a real chemical reason.

Finesse-It by 3M. A low speed electric sander with compounding sponge and plenty of water.
