GRP restoration-My own method . What\'s yours?
This could be boring if obsessive compulsive cleaning of your boat bores you LOL. I get this bug about once a year or so.
Since I'm not a professional at this I've had to trial and error find my own way to restor DreamFinder's 30 year old GRP skin to her former glory.
When I first had her I had G3'd her all over and used a teflon polish.
That was a weeks work last year and it got rid of the matt finish that had worn into her.
However, a few weeks ago I went over again with an international yacht rubbing compound and polish. The original smoothness hadn't gone particularly, just that she wasn't as shiny as all that .
However, after volunteering to do a friend's boat in the marina (I needed something to do whilst trying to learn spanish) I found out something interesting. I didn't know that G3, G6 and G10 were meant to be used with water.
LOLOL The Farecla bottles have little pics on them, but don't we all look for instructions in words? .
So now, I get to go over her again-far more slowly. I can get a near mirror finish with simply G6 (squeezy tube) by hand with a wet cloth-taking my time on each section.
Followed by LOTs of time on the G10 with another wet cloth.
After inspecting it real close (this gets rather sad-I spend ages looking at this), I finish off with a teflon wax and teflon sealer. Couple of coats of each .
So far I've done 3 different sections of her-They feel very much smoother and finer than the original finish. Dull ripples are eliminated and look like new now.
So, does anyone else get a bit of a polishing bug when they aren't travelling etc?
What do you like to use?
Got any other tips?
I've been told to try Tuff-seal, the 5 year one, as apparently its fine on top of what I have used and lasts longer. Thats my next experiment.
