group mmsi numbers

Looks like email to ofcom, a helpful member apparently applied and got a number then moved on to things less muddy without passing it on, hence trying to find list of existing numbers.

are you sure, according to my manual you just program the group number into your radio listing the members in that group which you have in the directory of the radio.
basically you are grouping a set of numbers together then when you call that group it will call that set of numbers, basically as simple as that..

Yes, but that group mmsi has to be allocated by Ofcom, before you can program it into your set, you can't just make one up. So if for instance you belong to a club, and want to use a group mmsi to contact club members, yhe club will need to contact Ofcom to be provided with one.

So if a group of 3 yachts go on a cruise together they have to register for a group number, from what i have read, its just a way of being able to contact everyone without having to call everyone separately. you input a group number into your set and list the mmsi numbers in that group.

the group number is just a number you would choose for your radio to identify the group of numbers you need to transmit to in your directory.

It's like you managing your mobile list in your phone how you need to do for your needs, same as a group number to get the appropriate numbers out of your radio directory list, i don't see what that has to do with ofcom, as all the mmsi numbers you have in your directory will be registered with ofcom anyway, so why would they need to know how you group them together... as it is only appliable to the group, and would not affect anyone else...you are not taking over any channel, all you are doing is ringing everyone in that list.

There is no where i have seen where you have to register a group number, if you know different then post the info....

this dsc is new to me so, if i have got it wrong then show the evidence for everyone to see...

Surely you should have covered this when you did your DSC course?

I've had a good look through the ofcom site, and can't see any mention of group mmsi. Back when the Radiocommunications agency provided licences, they certainly issued Group MMSI's

"MMSI numbers (including group MMSIs) are issued in the United Kingdom by Wray Castle Ltd on behalf of the Agency"
http://www1.bsc.org.uk/static/archive/ra/topics/maritime/airwaves/airwaves1/airwaves.htm

Group MMSI should conform to international requirements, that it starts with a zero, and then the MID (country code)

as can be seen from these UK group mmsi's I quickly searched for:

Woodbridge cruising club 023200009
Moody Owners association 023200031
Mylor Yacht Club 023200044
Ribnet 023200057
RCYC 023200059
Ashdown Sailing Club 023200060
Portishead Cruising club 023200069

Given the standard numbering of these, they would appear to have been 'officially' assigned group MMSI, and in fact on the Ashdown website it says
"Ofcom, the agency now responsible for the regulation of telecommunications, television and radio, including marine VHF, has allocated Ashdown Sailing Club a group MMSI (Maritime Mobile Service Identity)."
http://www.ashdownsailing.org.uk/Log2006FebASCGroupMMSI.htm

Further to my post, i am wrong , i have just spoken to ofcom and been informed that the group mmsi numbers are issued and regulated by them.

I asked about a scenario of a group(3 to 5) of individual leisure yachts going on an annual cruise requiring a group mmsi, and he said that they would most probably decline the request, as they only issue the group numbers to sailing clubs and port authorities and large organised events,(ie race fleets).

The list of boats in the group have to be listed to ofcom, and kept updated.

i took my src course in 2002 and the group mmsi numbers were not mentioned, as it was all new then, since then the information and course have been updated and more information and use of the dsc (d) system has been in place for the leisure user. so the instructors are now more informed of the system and most probably been using it for some time.

i am in the process of replacing my vhf for dsc, so have a new set of operating info to get my head around.

the info was gleaned from the icom m505 instruction manual which you can pdf off their site..
and no reference to the group mmsi in the ofcom site could be found.

so again aplogises to you brendan, as i had not understood the information i had read in my manual as no reference to the group numbers being regulated.

You're all quite right of course, but I have heard of less scrupulous types just making up their own ad hoc group MMSI on the grounds that the chances of hitting a real one in their radio area were too low to worry about as were the chances of being found out.

Taking your own MMSI number, removing the last digit, and putting a zero at the front, will have the format of a group mmsi number, including the MID, and if used with discretion, is hardly likely to bring down the powers that be. Not that I'm recommending this course of action you understand! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
