Greta Thunberg is crossing the Atlantic on Vagabond is ugly, the manipulated and the materialists, a hideous combination that highlights everything that is ****ed up in this world.

Sailors though regard it as a brilliant adventure to be applauded. Landsmen with limited knowledge get all whiney.
Love the way somebpeople who seem to know very little about boats are trying to tell them and others on here who have done it that they are doing it all wrong.
Smiley.

My thoughts exactly. The La Vaga crew have sailed over 90,000 nm . . . they have probably managed to pick up a smattering of knowledge and skill along the way.

I have not commented on their sailing or their sailing abilities, is that not obvious?

Webby, I see Vagabond as just a business, I also feel that a lot of YouTube stuff is just ostentatious and very contrived, but a lot of people like what they do and support their business model, which of course is fine. I find Greta Thunberg's actions as a climate activist are very powerful and help with the message. I do wonder if the combination of YouTube self publicists for profit and Greta Thunberg is exploitive for the benefit of Vagabond's continued visibility. Is it mutual, not so sure, as I don't see much comment about it in the media. I feel criticising this relationship is legitimate and does not warrant irrelevant comments about judging their sailing ability or experience nor the pointed comments and assertions on my sailing experience. However, that comes with the territory, posting on a forum.

Riley Whitelum of LaV talking to Oz ABC news just before leaving the next day (4mins long). He sees it as an opportunity for the business.

Of course Vagabond is a business! A sailing business. What on earth is wrong with that? It simply uses a modern way of using media.
Stacks pf people earn a living from sailing. I have for the last 23 years. Where is the problem???

It's this idiotic 'if you are a climate activist you must live in a cave and eat grubs' mentality I'm afraid.

I am sure Riley and Elayna genuinely wanted to help Greta, and it fitted in with their plans. But they would have been a bit daft not to have considered the effect on their lifestyle/business. If it increases the number of their viewers or Patreons then it will have been a win-win situation, what's not to like?

La Vagabonde doing 8.8 kts on track for the Azores as of 40 minutes ago. Still a lot of red swirling around out there.

Yeah well I suppose it takes all sorts. They had their boat moored near one of mine for a while in Rubicon. Charming couple and I reckon despite everything they are applying themselves and working hard.

Hey - I was only quoting a reference he made during the interview! While not an avid follower of their YT channel I think they're a decent couple (threesome now) and RW certainly has a pretty good idea of how to sail a boat.

Wishing them good luck - watching their progress with interest.

It might be fair to level that at some sailing YouTube channels but the early and most successful examples such as La Vagabonde and SV Delos got into YouTubing as an accidental by-product of regular blue water cruising.

I don't see anything fundamentally different between the modern day YouTube sailors just mentioned and the Hiscocks, Pardeys or Libby Purves of previous decades. They all have a passion for sailing and a special ability to share that passion with a broader audience.

All that has changed is the medium and the distribution mechanism. The big names of sailing in the past reached their audience via the controlled hierarchic structures inherent to mass media publishers of their time. Today's YouTubers have an intimate direct narrow casting relationship with their audiences.

You are missing out due to your preconceptions.

I wonder if La Vagabonde will be contractually allowed to air any meaningful conversations with Greta Thunberg. Regular La Vagabonde viewers will know that skipper Riley has an intellectually curious mind and consumes lots of philosophical material during his spare time aboard.

It would be great to hear how Greta's mind ticks when not under the spotlight on stage.

No, I am not missing out and I have no preconceptions. I have an opinion. I get lots of information from YouTube on many subjects and searching for information on sailing matters does not, ever, offer up a Vagabond video, so far, if it did I would use it. You miss the point like captain sensible did. You take my criticism and apply it to a context that is irrelevant to the point I make.

Just in case I am missing out, what do you think pre conceptions are?

You could say the same for many ventures , were eg the Beatles ,Elvis , James wharram , Andy Warhol, van goch , leonardo di Vinci , all just worthless commercial ventures , or did being commercial ventures make them worthless

I think that this is a very fair point. The Hiscocks made a film, iirc. which would certainly be a period piece now. Some of the things they got up to were imho ever so slightly naff, like putting a little globe on W3's pulpit to show they were on their second lap. I do notice that younger members of my family tend to watch YouTube rather than read.

I am not sure about the controlled hierarchic structures. Publishing was a cottage industry, then, and one that Hiscock was involved in himself. I suspect that YouTube is a controlled hierarchic structure of a different type.

I think the point is that the Hiscocks and the Pardeys were making a living out of going sailing, and had therefore chosen
to trade some privacy for cash, just like the YouTube people do. Libby Purves not so as she has a BBC leading presenter's salary ie megabucks.

Day 6.
Last night we had a huge lightening storm and we turned off all electrics and put our sat phones in the oven. Lol. We had a gust to 40 - 50 knots (but the crew couldn’t tell exactly... because we turned all electrics off and we’re hand steering). It got seriously windy though. It’s a bit like a washing machine out here to tell you the truth but we’re hooning and La Vagabonde is loving it. We’re all really comfortable and feeling great. Everything’s salty and wet and we can’t get our clothes dry.. the bananas have ripened so we are going bananas on the bananas and also the bread. It’s banana, peanut butter and cinnamon sandwiches for breakfast today!

Looks like they are now about one-third of the way from Virginia to Horta, with the worst of the weather out of the way for now.
