Since the dawn of mankind, some of us hominids have imagined that our actions have enraged supernatural entities.

Heavenly bodies, spirits in the sky, mother nature, poseidon, gaia, gods and demons, angry earthquakes, vengeful tsunamis, whichever; our actions have supposedly disturbed the 'balance', taken out more than we put in, upset the equilibrium, infuriated deities with our greed and despoilment of the land, ocean, or biosphere of the epoch.

The social phenomenon endlessly repeats itself, and every time the story is the same: We have been greedy, we must pay by suffering armageddon, unless we act, and act now! It's nearly to late, but if we hurry, we have a chance to save ourselves!

Each time around, the mass hysteria is exploited by cynical agents, whether long-forgotton shamens, witch-doctors, prophets, seers, cult leaders, priests, politicians, to whip up a frenzy of self-flagellation and demented wailing for sacrifices to be made, by all of us!

There is always contemporary proof to satisfy the gullible, whether thunderstorms, volcanic eruptions, plagues and pestilences, or dubious hockey-stick graphs it matters not.

Those who question, or even mock, the mass stampede into panicked idiocy have for millenia been reviled, and no doubt cast out and even sacrified to propitiate the furious deity of the era.

Despite numerous dispassionate analyses of this curious spasm of evolutionary psychology, it seems destined to continue for ever. Just like the planet in fact!

That's really quite good.:encouragement: But why did you miss out eclipses?

I think they have an amazing boat. Every time I look at the live update they seem to be doing at least 7 knots. And I suspect they are being cautious

Somethings not right. They are broad reaching with 26kt of wind, but only doing 7kt, which is stood still for their boat. I hope little baby is well and I don’t mean Grater.

Even more reason to exploit one of the strongest safety aspects of their particular boat and get the heck out of there......:)

You seem to know as little about cruising cats and ocean passages as you do about everything else, but of course that never stops you.

This is not a wave-piercing hull-lifting flying machine. It is an ocean-going family cruising boat, designed for safety and ease of handling. Going to windward or reaching in a cat you reef by the numbers. An ocean passage at this time of year with a baby on board and you knock a few knots off those numbers. At night you put an extra reef in whether you need it or not.

Yes, La Vaga will do 12 knots or more on a blue sky downwind day with a good forecast, but in the current wind and sea conditions 7.5 knot is just fine.

I think it is you that knows little about Outremer cats. It is not a fat slow family cruiser such as you might be familiar with. There is no reason to do 6.5kt now in a broad reach in good winds and a following sea in that boat unless you have unhappy or unwell passengers.

Edit: I looked up the sea state. It’s actually coming at them seemingly, so that will be the party pooper.

I've crossed the Atlantic in a fast cruising cat of a similar size, have you?

As you have now apparently discovered, they do not have following seas, neither are they broad-reaching. The apparent wind will still be slightly ahead of the beam.

After a number of complaints we have deleted some posts deemed inappropriate/off topic for Scuttlebutt. Please try to stay on the topic of the thread and don't post anything you might not see in YM. If you wish to post "Loungesque" comments, please post them in The Lounge.

Thank you for your help.

No. Not in a fast cat and neither have you I believe. Matt’s FP was very much a cruiser, not a fast cat. Please don’t wave your willy like that. Look up Outremer, they are not the same.

Also they were broad reaching. That term relates to the true, not to the apparent wind. Anyway at 6.5kt boat speed and 25kt breeze apparent wind on a reach will change negligibly.

So now they are up to 8.9 kt. Still nighttime and similar conditions from forecasts.

Have you sailed an Outremer, or are you just dazzled by their publicity material?

Matt's cat was an Alliaura Privilege 495, not a Fountaine Pajot. Nonetheless, I accept that the Outremer could probably outsail it if being raced head to head. This is an Atlantic crossing W-E with novices and a baby in bad weather at a difficult time of year though and I have no doubt you would be among the first to complain about irresponsibility if they were breaking records, as you seem to be determined to find some fault with this voyage.

We sailed Mojomo downwind at speeds between 12 and 19 knots for days, but on the few days with the apparent wind forward of the beam things were a lot more pedestrian and a lot less comfortable. That is the way cruising cats are, and the Outremer is still a cruising cat in spite of all the 'performance' advertising.

Re. the change in apparent wind - using current data (28kts TWS @ 178, boat speed 7.8 knots @63 degrees) - this is technically a 'broad reach' with the true wind 15 degrees aft of the beam. However, a quick calculation shows the apparent wind direction to be 89 degrees relative to the boat, or 1 degree forward of the beam, a shift of 16 degrees, putting the wind squarely on the beam. I don't regard that as insignificant in the current conditions, but I accept that you might.

Greta Thunberg is crossing the Atlantic on Vagabond is ugly, the manipulated and the materialists, a hideous combination that highlights everything that is ****ed up in this world.
