this looks like the replacement for the "Autohelm Personal Compass"

Silva Nomad Digital Handbearing Compass
Cat No: SI46000 £49.95

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A new electronic digital handbearing compass from Silva at a very reasonable price. It has dual functions as it can be used as a hand bearing compass to memorise a bearing. Also enter your course and it will guide you with an arrow to the direction you should be steering. It has a backlit LCD so it can be used at night, has a sensor which warns of external magnetic disturbance and comes with both neck and wrist lanyard. It is water resistant, measures 89 x 61 x 23 mm and includes 3v lithium battery.

All that for 5p short of fifty quid. How much commission are you on by the way?

If it's the one I know it has to be held level to work. Great if you're in the middle of a forest, not so good bouncing about in a small boat.

Autohelm personal compii put in frequent appearances on eBay

IIRC the autohelm was £70 when new. They were supposed to be held level, but accepted a certain amount of movement. It had 9 memories, and when I got hold of one I found that the most accurate way was to take each bearing of a 3 point fix 3 times, and then mean the readings.
