Hi
Any advice on which grease gun to fit on a 26 foot yacht? Checking my stern tube, there is a grease nipple on it, but no greasing system. I have seen the type before that is permanently fitted with a twist top that you put a couple of turns on every time you go out. Any ideas on make/ model? I cant seem to find anything.
Cheers

go to your local bearing/powertrain supplier, if you can take the existing nipple with you. thet should be able to match the thread (metric or imperial). they may suggest an ordinary grease gun, or a remote mounted line, if that's easier.

there is a make called LASER which offers a small lever action grease gun which will also take a flexible tube about 15 inches which is handly when access is limited. Sold at many auto factors.
also range of grease guns on amazon.co.uk

Thankyou Lakesailor, I will be fitting one of those over the winter (as soon as I know what size I need) and I will be happy to throw away the old pump greaser that rattles round my bilges at present. At that price (even allowing for VAT, P&P and phone bill) who could resist. I just hope they don't run out (or add a zero to the price) after 200 calls from forumites.

I thought he was looking for a pressure greaser not a gravity oiler. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Not really, the present one is an oil bath (halyard) type. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

the type you posted, is it auto i.e. spring driven to keep a constant flow?

I had totally forgotten about the reservoirs that lakey posted and might pick up a pair.

I made a mistake and bought one of those cartridge type guns, thinking it would be easy enough to refil by hand, it isn't. Although the cartridges don't break the bank I don't want to be tied to them.

It is a right pain having two stern tubes 12ft apart in different boats and they are under the sleeping cabins, I hate taking the grease gun in there as I am afraid of marking the bedding or white carpet (walls).

I guess the link you gave (cliff) would mean the greasers could be remote which is appealing. shame I would need two though /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

My other fear would be extracting the old nipple, it holds the same fear as trying to slacken a brake bleeder on an old car, nnnngh snAP!

[/ QUOTE ]No, Manual by turning the handle.

What about running two lines from your stern seals to somewhere convenient and fitting remote grease nipples. Have a look at some excavators - the pin joints are sometimes greased by this method.

Theres a bit of diff between the "grease gun" arrangement required in the question to a gravity oil feeder! Cant find the clue, perhaps it me.
