grease for propeller

I wouldn't be too sure about that.

The OP is looking for a grease for a folding prop exactly the same as mine and the Millers waterpump grease is perfect for that, whereas LittleSister is looking for a "high viscosity" thick grease as recommended by Varifold and the Millers also fits the bill for that. :)

But what Norman actually said was .
"I have a tube of the Darglow grease in front of me. The only thing on the label that gives any clue is NLGI 1 GRADE which is a softness grade as shown in this table https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NLGI_consistency_number

What make it is I don't know, and cannot tell whether it is lithium or calcium based.

EDIT. The Millers waterpump grease linked in the above post is NLGI 4 and therefore far too thick for a feathering propeller."

On that basis he concludes that a NLGI 4 grease, such as Millers waterpump grease you suggest , will be too thick.

Folkboat Melody confirms that the grease Darglow supply is labelled NLGI 1

Which is the correct grade? The grade 4 grease you suggest or the grade 1 grease Darglow supply ? ...... Id stick with a grease the same grade as that supplied by Darglow.

We dont know what grade of grease Varifold supply .

I have a tube of the grease that came with my Featherstream prop and a tub of Blake's Seacock grease that came with the boat and I cannot tell any difference between them.

Both are green, stringy and extremely sticky!

If grade 4 really is the consistency of frozen yoghurt, as the table suggests I think it would stop most feathering props from feathering, and might make a folding prop fail to fold completely. Certainly there seems to be a very good reason to use a soft grease in my Maxprop.

As I said, although it has been missed by others, it depends upon which poster we are replying to.

If we are replying to Gordon029, who has a Flex-o-Fold like me, then the thick waterproof grease I linked to is perfect. I have packed my Flex-O-Folds to the limit such that the first time I operated them the excess grease squeezed out around the anode. The resistance of the blades during operation after that was identical to when there was no grease present at all, just a little quieter.

If we are replying to LittleSister, he/she specifically asked for a recommendation for a "high viscosity" thick grease which is hydrophobic .... which, once again, is exactly what I have described. Perhaps the white grease mentioned by LittleSister as being unsuitable is too thin but as I don't use the same prop as LittleSister this is not my area of experience so I make no comment either way about whether the waterproof grease is suitable for his prop. I am simply replying to his specific query. :)

As the op I would like to thank all who made time to respond to my post.I have no doubt there are alternatives but considering the price of the prop I decided to go with what is recommended by Darglow so contacted them by phone this morning and as in all my dealings with them they were both helpful and efficient and put a tube of the required grease in the post today. So the launch is delayed slightly but I have the extra few days to polish. Thanks again.
