Grand Designs next week

Apart from this week's project - which I found quite frightening - Prince Charles' commments about the National Gallery extension come to mind but which confirms my view that architects are designers and have little understanding of the mechanics of building.

Next week's house almost blends into it's surroundings given that the Thames is one place that seems to thrive on buildings that appear to be wacky. This particular one looked 'orrible as it went up, but now that it is finished and beginning to wear off it's newness, methinks it's a great addition to the riverscape.

Coming downstream it stands out, but doesn't scream at you.

I've seen it recently when the daylight is starting to go and they put the lights on....it's been very well done. The only bit that would put me off is the tiny slither of land it has.....I need my space!

I think it's a case of need must. IIRC the space was occupied by a (dilapidated) boat house and its land was sold on when the adjoining house was sold.

Who needs lateral space when the whole aspect faces The View and the whole of the front is glazed.

(I agree with you - I need space as well, but.....)
 
Personally for me the more modern the better and if traditionalists get annoyed about it ...even better !

Anybody remember the disaster houseboat they previously featured,last time I saw it,was abandoned and aground somewhere off Rayleigh.
 
The beauty of our river is that it is a 150 mile ribbon development consisting of dwellings and structures spanning centuries with almost no homogeneity.
Virtually anything goes from the ticky tacky shed like beach hut like sheds spanning through the Maidenhead mansions both classical and modern. I don't necessarily like it all;( for that matter I dont particularly like the design of my place but I have plans) but it does make our gongoozling up and down the river so much more interesting.:)

The large mock Tudor place on the left bank as you go downstream, about two/three houses before the Grand Designs place.

Had a narrowboat called "Little Jazz" outside (which has gone) and now had a Maxum Sportscruiser there (probably renting the mooring)

Ahhh got it! Lovely house and yes.... Wondered why that fencing was up between them and the sculptor's place
