Would you believe it, after our first season in the Med, yesterday I had one of the best boating days out all season.................on the River Ouse and the Humber!! all thanks to Martyn Whiteley.

We left Goole Sur Mer(de) about 11.30 in overcast but mild and windless conditions blasted down the Ouse and into a flat calm Humber - not seen water that calm all year!. Moored up for a quick one at the Hope & Anchor South Ferriby (wonderful scenic views of the cement works) and headed back. It was so calm that we had to use the MBM boat test technique of crossing our own wake to have some bouncy fun.

I think Martyns concerns about his boats handling were misplaced, the Rinker handled really great and we managed to get 38 mph on the speedo.

Just two hairy moments, first when we lost revs - memories of my last time out on my boat came flooding back (and I'm sure Martyn thought I had brought my jinx with me). It turned out to be plantlife on the prop which cleared itself as soon as we eased off the throttle.

The second incident was potentially more serious. On the return journey MW nearly started telling me about converting his last boat to diesel!!!! We were in wide open water at the time and I contemplated my chances of abandoning ship and swimming to the shore. It would have been cold and dangerous but I thought it may be my only way out. Fortunately he changed the subject before I needed to execute my escape plan. Phew.

As we had to wait to be locked back into the docks at Goole, the light was fading when we moored up. On the Ouse we didn't see another boat and on the Humber we saw just three commercial barges making their way up river and a couple of Raggies hogging the jetty at the Hope and Anchor.

A very enjoyable days boating and anyone thinking of taking their boat out for the winter should reconsider IMHO.

Thanks Martyn for a grand day out.

Martyn

Glad to hear it Martyn, the Ouse/Humber can be a great day out for boating at any time of year... I often consider getting a day boat just to use there!

Re: Hm

Is this a total windup? Essentially you have gone boating in an effluent discharge canal. In a posh boat as well. I expect MW was wearing his special "socks" too, hm? What utter showoffs, you deserve to be the embarrassing "and finally" item on Look North.

Re: Hm

I percieve your comments are bourne from jealousy, this is understandable. Whilst you are roughing it in the Solent or SoF we were undertaking a epic voyage of disscovery in one of the worlds great cruising grounds.

Once seen, who can ever erase from the mind the stunning vision that is the sun setting over Drax Power Station (except we didn't see it because it was too cloudy).
Likewise the memorable feeling of the drizzle in our faces as we sped majestic like back towards Goole - leaving the skin on our faces feeling weathered and glowing (what do you mean Acid Rain?)

Your comment about MW's special socks really exposes your lack of serious cruising experience. They are in fact the new HH self draining socks. In the event of MOB, water retention in clothing is a major problem, the holes in these socks have been specifically designed to prevent this . H1 had 17 pairs on his boat just in case.

I should also have mentioned the fact that we rounded the day off with a McDonalds meal - one each, didn't even share the chips. Ha beat that !!!!

Re: Hm

Huh! You've come up with some far-fetched stories, but buying a whole Macdonalds meal EACH in Goole shows you have completely lost your marbles and are now showing distinct Walter Mitty tendencies. Admit it, you had fish paste sandwiches, which were a bit curvy after someone had sat onnem, again.

The lovely view of the cement works spoiled by the Rinker. (Sorry about the quality on that one - took it on the phone)

Re: Hm

Ah now I know why Martyn said goodbye whilst still inside the MacDonalds, he obviously returned to the counter to complain after I left, and got a full refund!

....meanwhile I was out in the car park syphoning petrol from half a dozen cars, ready to fuel up the rinker for its next trip.

I did try and pinch the T5 diesel from an 04 reg dark blue disco in the car park, but got disturbed before I could open the bonnet.

Re: Fab

It seems that you took that last one whilst walking along the shore. Did you eventualy find the beach bar you were looking for?

Also, I note that the water is very blue, alright, sort of brownish blue, but bluer than outright black with lumpsof crud in, i suppose, which is a very good start. You were lucky with the weather too - not actually chucking it down!

Very good idea for martyn to keep that bit of rope on the dashboard - you can't be too careful with valuables, i think.

Re: Hm

Best way will be to apply for a job as an AA man. That way, you'll be able to "fix" lots of cars which have broken down on account of having the petrol tank too full. I suppose if you were reasonably quick with the spanners you could also take away a couple of diesel engines for inspection, only to discover that they are sadly beyond repair, so they'll need a new one, and pleased to be of assistance sir...

Re: Fab

Good rope that, it would be a shame to loose it.

Unfortunately MW's camera battery ran out which means we can't show you the bikini clad bronzed beauties who flocked around us as we walked to the beach bar wanting to which of us "studs" owned the boat. If you have seen the video for "Call On Me" you will get the picture. All was going well until MW removed his deckies for a foot massage - like you the sirens didn't seem to appreciate the high tech. HH socks.

Yep, here's the bar in question.

Two nice pints of 'Tom Woods' were consumed, a very local bitter that will be alien even to most so-called fully paid up Northerners.

The crud is also clearly in view. I'm sure it comes from the ballast dumped by foreign ships coming up the Humber.

The rope was just a 'crutch' for Martyn, since I was threatening to talk diesel swapping, he was close to knotting it around the radar arch, but just kept it close for comfort, and after a few deep breaths he got through, although he's now in York district hospital suffering from hydroflouric acid inhallation from the local refinery.

Re: Hm

Yes things went dowhill after you left. Only managed to get one meal refunded then I went outside and some bu%%er had been trying to break into my car via the bonnet (strange that, its not the most obvious point of entry) and I couldn't reverse out because someone had left a large American engine block right behind my car - funnily enough it had a piece of rope attached to it just like that one on your boat.

Then I had to spend the next hour shuttling car owners from McD's carpark up to the petrol station - amazingly they had all run out of petrol in the car park - what a co-incidence.

Did you recover your cap?

Thanks again for a great day

Martyn

If the sock fits....

Look, we can't all afford socks like these......

Image_045.sized.jpg

But at least we don't have to use duck tape to hold up our covers......

Re: yeah but

i nicked it actually. Well, actually, not me on my own - I managed to get two blokes to help me shift it to another pontoon one afternoon, so it's mine now.

I\'m very disappointed Martyn!!

I was looking forward to the following features in your pictures:-

10 Semi-submerged branches
9 Discarded propane bottles
8 Rusting supermarket trollies
7 Dead sheep (perhaps that was what slowed you down?)
6 Black rubbish bags
5 Clumps of semi-solid brown spume
4 Gypsy caravans
3 Gushing effluent pipes (you need this to warm the water up a little)
2 Filthy factories
...and a Partridge in a pear tree (both dead, of course!)

Re: I\'m very disappointed Martyn!!

Merry Xmas Dave,

Must admit I burned the midnight oil on Paintshop Pro removing all those artifacts before posting, just missed the one filthy factory.

Good job Martyn hasn't bought a digi camera yet, or he'd be posting one of me peeing off the bathing platform (my little contribution to cleaning up the Humber), instead he just threatend to go full ahead!

Funnyly enough, In a previous job I was negotiating to get a discharge consent for a waste water outfall just off the east coast above the Humber. It became quite amusing when the NRA admitted that you wouldn't be able to get a consent to discharge neat water from the Humber into the North Sea without treating it!!
